MISTREATED MINDS is a documentary about the often overwhelming stigma facing those who are challenged with mental health conditions. In 1992, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) and Public Citizen's Health Research Group released a report that "revealed alarmingly high numbers of people with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other severe mental illnesses incarcerated in jails across the country. Most of these people had not committed major crimes, but either had been charged with misdemeanors or minor felonies directly related to the symptoms of their untreated mental illnesses, or had been charged with no crimes at all." Missing: adj. Not present; absent. Throwaway: n. Something designed or likely to be discarded after use. By definition, youth are not meant to be missing or thrown away, but it happens. When it does, Social Advocates for Youth is there. The California Department of Justice defines missing child as one who has left home without the knowledge or permission of parents or guardian. In California, approximately 110,300 children a year were reported missing for 2006, 2007, and 2008. During the same three year period, an average of 1,100 youth was reported missing in Sonoma County. SAYs Dr. James Coffee House is the only 24/7 emergency youth shelter in Sonoma County since 1991. The Coffee House fills a profound need in our community. Without the Coffee House, Sonoma County would have no safety net for young people who run away or who have been kicked out of their homes. or your role-play, use the following scenario as a guide: You are meeting the client for the first time. The presenting problem is a romantic relationship breakup, the last of a string of many breakups. Because of the breakup, the client has been making serious mistakes at work, almost had an auto accident because of lack of attention, and has failed to pay bills for the month. The client tearfully reports feeling like a total failure, and states that the pain is just too much to continue to bear. The client has been seriously thinking about how to deal with this; one thought is to simply flee the area and never return; another idea is to "go get stinking drunk and see what happens next," and another is to ingest as many pain-killers as possible, washed down with a pint of vodka. The client has access to a large prescription of Vicodin. The client made a suicide attempt a few years ago that resulted in a medical hospitalization, but never followed up with therapy or counseling.
