Outlandings are an inevitable part of the cross-country soaring experience. As such, it is critical to be mentally and logistically prepared for this outcome on every cross-country flight. Take the time to review this lecture to assist you with minimising the risk to you and your glider when the time comes. Bernard is a German-born glider pilot and agent for a number of European gliding manufacturers. He moved to Australia in 1983 and has since risen to high standing within the sport, particularly through the role of head coach for SA/NT. Over 3500 hours and approximately 300,000 km of cross-country experience leave him well placed to discuss outlandings; indeed, Bernard has authored a book, "Advanced Soaring Made Easy" that covers this and many other important topics. Recorded at The University of Adelaide 19/09/2011.

Analysing logger traces recorded by the world's top glider pilots gives us some insight into cross-country performance that is achievable, and hence a benchmark to aspire to. Terry provides an in depth analysis of the pilot performances at the recent Uvalde world gliding championships and also shows how different styles and techniques of racing impact on cross-country speed. Terry Cubley is a gliding coach and instructor at Adelaide Soaring Club. Terry is the current national champion in both 15m and 20m two-seat classes and has represented Australia at seven world gliding competitions. He was the team captain/coach at the recent Uvalde world championships. Recorded at The University of Adelaide 15/10/2012.

Properly analysing your cross-country flights should accelerate improvements in your soaring efficiency. This lecture shows how you can compare and contrast track deviations, effective glide ratios, percent time at nominated block speeds, etc. Matthew demonstrates how to use the interface and interpret the output from SeeYou with his own cross-country flights as examples. A free online analysis program, Skylines (available at skylines.xcsoar.org), is also introduced. Matthew Scutter is a junior glider pilot from Adelaide Soaring Club, who recently represented Australia at the 2011 Junior World Gliding Competition. He enjoys flying an LS4 cross-country most weekends and travelling to competitions, regattas and wave camps around Australia. Recorded at The University of Adelaide 15/10/2012.
