BLACK RIVER FALLS - A new play by Bryn Magnus June 19-July 26, 2015, at the Prop Thtr Tickets at http://curioustheatrebranch.com Gary comes back early from Black River Falls, his hunting trip cut short by an ominous feeling. It’s Thanksgiving weekend, 1978; Jim Jones and his followers have just drunk the Kool-Aid, and Gary wants to see his little sister Laurie. All the teenagers in Dousman, Wisconsin, are finding out that closeness with each other is sometimes wanted and not simple, and sometimes not wanted and very simple. In their tiny midwestern small town world, masculine violence and an inchoate longing towards something that might be peace infects them all. A disarmingly poetic evocation of teenaged monosyllabicism, Black River Falls blends naturalism with a kind of small-town mysticism, where quiet anarchy and blowhardy bullies are in conflict. The adults can only stand by and marvel at the microcosm of violence and transcendence their children enact. Directed by Jenny Magnus Featuring Matt Rieger, Maci Greenberg, Sam Liss, John Machesky, Diane McNulty, Nick Leininger, Stephen Walker Video by Jeffrey Bivens Music by Jenny Magnus

An interview with composer and librettist Matt Test about the music of RUNG, the final show in Curious Theatre Branch's 2013-2014 season. A loose-grip mash up of Frankenstein, Noah's Ark, and dilettante epistemology, RUNG is an experimental chamber opera about an obsessive recluse building a body for a disembodied voice. Neither rehearsal nor the real thing. This is the whiz-bang bang-out smash-up playwise beachtime markety marketing video thingy for Beau’s new play Evanston, Which Is Over There, made with real actors in real character in real time. Really opening November 9 at the Side Project. The two-act comedy takes place in the wilds of Chicago's Rogers Park—its beaches, coffee shops and non-working elevator buildings. Henry Moore, a sometime writer, is passing out and falling in love all over the place, and his sometime friends who can't abide each other—BB, a once-remarkable star of the local stage who now prefers martinis and solid decision making, and Hank, a rhythmically challenged ukulele player—are concerned. Various remedies are tried—Jug Band music, miniature golf, meditation—but nothing seems to be working. His neighborhood, which includes his compulsive counting step-daughter, a Buddhist runner with a penchant for spouting Sufi poems, and a disgraced psychotic cop determined to catch someone for something, surrounds him with life and disappointment. Featuring Curious members HB Ward, Jeffrey Bivens, Jayita Bhattacharya, Troy Martin, Matt Rieger and Beau O'Reilly, with guests Judith Harding, Cat Jarboe, Sid Page, Nancy Andria, Jordan Stacey, Mitch Salm, Naomi Washer and Shelby Shaw.
