Ross Institute Summer Academy is an annual weeklong conference held in August in East Hampton, NY. Each year, Ross School leadership and faculty come together to engage in professional development and an exchange of ideas with both colleagues and experts. Participants in the 2014 Summer Academy conference “Human Species Impact and Our Planet: Educating Children for Action,” examined the Earth’s sustainability crisis as both an Early Childhood through grade 12 education issue and a youth rights issue. Teachers and administrators then worked to refine the thread of sustainability within the Ross curriculum. Informed by systems thinking, this material focuses attention on—and instills a sense of urgency about—understanding the complexities of this issue and developing creative solutions in response. Ross School faculty gather together at the end of each summer to prepare for the new school year. This August, new and returning teachers spent time reflecting on the Ross School Mission, Vision, and Core Values and considered how the implementation of the Ross Model plays out in the day to day of Ross School. Grade level faculty also participated in a series of workshops where they worked on developing curricular materials, discussing and incorporating a systems thinking perspective. They also spent time working on developing a curricular histomap—a new visualization of the Ross curriculum that encompasses the cross-domain learning experiences that occur at each grade level. Every five to seven years academic degree programs in the CUNY system have to undergo a process called a Periodic Program Review (PPR). The PPR is an in depth look at the academic major under review from a programmatic, institutional, and industry wide perspective. The goal of the PPR is to begin an honest review of the program effectiveness, which will then be used to help to guide the evolution of the major for the next five to seven years. Because I am the sole full time New Media faculty member, the research and drafting of the report became my responsibility. The following video is my presentation of the PPR report findings to the LaGuardia Community College faculty. The LaGuardia New Media Technology PPR can be downloaded at https://www.academia.edu/3804314/Periodic_Program_Review_for_the_LaGuardia_Community_College_New_Media_Technology_degree
