The Fitting Room: Mamou-Mani and Arup Associates have collaborated on the creation of a giant sculptural origami piece that activates the store facade of Davidson Tsui, in Xintiandi Style, Shanghai. Customers and passers-by can interact with the installation by posing in the window “Wearing” an oversized architectural “hat” and “dress” that animate the windows and facade of the shop. The curved feminine form of the exterior contrasts with the masculine triangular interior and reflects the notion of duality (ying-yang) in Chinese culture. The installation is part of the RIBA Shanghai Window Diplay Project 2014. More Info: http://mamou-mani.com/RIBASHANGHAI/

Keith Varney is a ceramicist fascinated by form, line and texture, with the use of curved folding a defining part of his practice. He's inspired by the ways these elements interact with light, shade and colour to create his contemporary ceramic sculpture and vessels. Keith enjoys the qualities of clay, its unlimited potential to take on new forms and textures, worked only by simple tools and hands alone, the irreversible transformation in the intense heat of the kiln having the last word. The material qualities of clay and the physicality of the making process itself are at the heart of his practice. Keith works in porcelain and bone china for their purity, translucency, and clear bright colours when glazed. http://www.keithvarney.co.uk/

Overview: This research project explores the behaviour of curved folding in furniture design to impart structural stability to pliable sheet products, bypassing the demand of moulds in the production process. Detail: Plastics in product design rely primarily upon thermoforming, die casting, and injection moulding for production. While effective, these processes require the fabrication of moulds prior to casting or forming. This intermediate step entails the manufacture and management of a vast number of negatives across the industry. This system of fabrication poses demands upon delivery time, material resources, and storage space. This movie is a narrative transcription of one year of work of the new class “In Silico Building” in the Faculty of Architecture at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). It relates a methodology of taking material effects associated with the proper fabrication method as a starting point for architectural design and construction. The research on intricate relationships between material and machine, associated to a reflection on the assembly level but also at the functional one, envisions a new vocabulary for architectural elements and spaces. The video will be shown in Video Panorama that will take place from 27th to 30th September 2012 in the Forum -1 of the Pompidou Center in Paris, as part of the Advances in Architectural Geometry 2012 Conference [aag12.architecturalgeometry.at/]

Event: Advances in Architectural Geometry 2010, Vienna Workshop: One DOF linkage manipulation using rigid origami Tutors: Gregory Epps and Tomohiro Tachi Design group: Doors & Openings 2 Group members: Jacek Jaskólski Thorsten Lang Ana Maria Marcu Ioanna Symeonidou Liam Woolley The video shows a rationalization of a curved fold using triangular and quadrilateral flat panels. This was used as base for the construction of thick panel origami prototype. (more details and videos to come) The simulation was done using Tomohiro's excelent Rigid Origami Simulator (http://www.tsg.ne.jp/TT/software/index.html#rigid_origami).
