we are building a custom cargo bike capable of carrying three full kegs of beer.(3 15.5 gal half barrels is 500 pounds). Josh will ride the bike to NAHBS in march to show that it is not a concept or designer bike, but a practical bike designed to be used in the working environment. The bike will have a true American aesthetic style as well.

              • brazing front triangle

This is a stop-motion type video of how I braze a front triangle plus a few pictures of the chainstays in place, then the full frame and fork with wheels and dummy headset. I didn't take sequence photos of the chainstay/seatstay process. The frame has S&S couplers and was built for 650B x 42mm tires. I will assemble it into a Travel Randonneur bike for a rider going to PBP in August 2011. I start with all components in the frame jig, which have already been pinned in place and checked on the alignment table. I tack the joints one by one, starting with the seat tube/bottom bracket. Each time I tack a joint, I pull the triangle out of the jig to check it on the table and adjust, before proceeding to the next one. Then, with all joints tacked in place and checked on the table, I put the front triangle in the workstand to complete the full braze of each joint. I check the triangle on the table only after all the joints are brazed. This frame was silver brazed using oxy/acetylene welding gas. I took the photos on my Nikon D70 on a tripod using a small handheld remote for each shot. It's awkward to hold the remote in the same hand as the silver brazing rod, but towards the end, I had a better technique. Unfortunately, the infrared remote must be pointed directly at the camera sensor to operate.

This is what a very typical day in the shop looks like for Mitch of MAP Bicycles and myself. He is working on some front racks, and I'm working on a fork and racks. It's really good to be able to talk through ideas with someone else, and I think we do a pretty good job of helping each other figure things out. We both have our stylistic differences, obviously, but there are often several ways to approach a problem, and to get insight into it, I think, makes each of us a little bit better at what we do. I've come to value that shared insight.
