1. Civil and Public Sector Union (CPSU) Rally Dublin 18th February 2009

The Irish government want low paid workers to pay for the economic crisis by introducing a 'pension levy'. This means low paid workers in Clerical Officer grades will be forced to pay, against their will, an extra €40/50 minimum per week. This is not a levy but a pay cut for the lower paid. Over three thousand civil service workers from all over the country, came out to protest at a lunchtime rally in Dublin outside the Dáil (Parliment) on Wednesday 18th February. This attack is a Thatcherite move- break the strongest unions, ie the Public Sector and then go for the private sector. This is a rough cut which provides a sense of what happened. Events are happening so fast it's a serious challenge to turn the edited work around. (c) Paula Geraghty

THe group was addressed by Labour party TD Mr Tommy Broughan, the only member of the Irish Parliament to come out and support the aggrieved taxi drivers. THe march started on Parnell Square to O`Connel Street, D`Olier Street,College Green,Nassau Street,Kildare Street,Merrion Row,Pembroke Street,Fitzwilliam Square a the Taxi Regulators office where a letter outlining the difficulties facing taxi drivers was eventually and reluctantly accepted by the staff. At first they would not even open the door but I think the Gardai intervened. THe Gardai played a stormer and everybody eventually dispersed peacefully. Note: Gardai is Irish for police.
