Após um conceitualismo direcionado para trabalhos em revistas, em 1969 Graham ingressa na Nova Scotia College of Art, Canadá, passando a se dedicar à realização de performances, vídeos, filmes Super 8mm e uma série de instalações que culminam com Public Space/Two Audiences [Bienal de Veneza, 1976]. Sentindo-se preso ao conceito do cubo branco, por um breve período, Graham desenvolve projetos de intervenção urbana, utilizando televisão e vídeo, até que, no início dos anos 1980, começa a construir os pavilhões que desenvolve até hoje.

                  On the 24.04.2013 1134 people were killed in the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse in Bangladesh while working in inhumane conditions producing clothes for high-street American and European brands. It was just few months after the fire blast in another factory. Overall, since 1990 almost 1500 people were killed and more than 4000 seriously injured in the series of catastrophes in Bangladeshi fashion production sector. Since TV revolution the information regarding accidents, terrorist attacks, human humiliation and death in general, have been being displayed on daily basis through TV broadcast and print media. Most recently, it is the Internet and social media to be the main disposal platform for the news of all sorts. At the same time, some of the global horrific events are more memorable than the others, while many are left almost unnoticed. For instance, on 11.09.2001 2998 people were killed in the United States by 19 terrorists and that event changed contemporary world on many levels, to start with the way people travel to the tangible craze of surveillance. At the same time, there is still a great proportion of people who are not aware of recent Bangladeshi disaster. Did the Rana Plaza tragedy change the way customers perceive and consume fashion? While being obsessed with buying more for less, buying the latest bits and consuming fashion as if it was food, more often than not without consideration of one’s choices, have customers of fashion in general become terrorists themselves? Is it ethical to buy a T-shirt which is cheaper than your lunch? Contemporary fashion brands are expected to be “instagramable” and “social-media friendly”. The number of “Thumbs” or “Likes” is the new exponent of success and free marketing tool reaching the vast audience. Fashion is no longer exclusive. It is an inclusive element of contemporary culture and the contest of popularity. Everyone’s invited. Fashion, whether high-street or high-end, has become the new Coca-Cola, a tasty product available for masses - whether on a shop floor for those who can afford it and on the screen of a smart phone for those who cannot.

                    This installation by Dan Graham (born 1942, Urbana, Illinois) is the second in a new series of site-specific commissions for the Museum's Roof Garden. Comprising curves of steel and two-way mirrored glass set between ivy hedgerows, Graham's structure is part garden maze, part modernist skyscraper facade. Viewers who enter the work are transformed into performers; in glimpsing their own reflections, they are also made acutely aware of the act of looking. For the past fifty years Graham has engaged his interest in architecture and the way it structures public space through a multidisciplinary practice encompassing writing, photography, video, performance, and—beginning in the 1970s—sculptural environments of mirrored glass and metal. He calls these hybrid structures "pavilions" after the ornamental buildings that decorate seventeenth- and eighteenth-century formal gardens—architectural fantasies inspired by the ruins of classical antiquity. Graham's pavilions similarly invite romance or play, but their forms and materials have a more contemporary source: the gleaming glass facades of modern office towers. For the artist, the mirrored cladding of a corporate headquarters symbolizes economic power and sleek efficiency and also provides camouflage, reflecting the world around it as it shields what happens inside from prying eyes. The artist's pavilions likewise respond to their specific sites. The Roof Garden, where the idyllic expanse of Central Park confronts the tall buildings of midtown Manhattan, is both of the city and at a certain remove from it. The evergreen plantings that edge the parapets also remind Graham of the shrubbery that often demarcates property lines in the New Jersey suburbs of his youth. His Hedge Two-Way Mirror Walkabout, set within a specially engineered terrain designed in collaboration with the Swiss landscape architect Günther Vogt (born 1957, Balzers, Liechtenstein), employs these multilayered references—palace gardens, public parks, contemporary corporate architecture, and the suburban lawn—as it engages the viewer in a historic and complex mirror play.
