China is Africa’s largest trading partner and buys more than 1/3 of its oil from the continent. Its money has paid for countless new schools and hospitals. Some say that China has done more to end poverty in Africa than any other country. Others accuse China of engaging in colonialism. What interests govern China’s efforts in Africa? Should China’s growing emphasis on political ties and natural resource extraction inform U.S. relations with African nations? To address this topic, we will be joined by two esteemed faculty members from The Ohio State University, Dr. Kelechi Kalu and Professor Daniel Chow. Kelechi Kalu is the Associate Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs in the Office of International Affairs. He is also a professor of African American and African Studies specializing in African and Third World politics, development and underdevelopment studies, globalization, ethnic politics and state reconstruction in Africa, as well as the political economy of foreign relations. Dr. Kalu earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of North Texas, an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Dayton, and a Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of Denver. Daniel Chow is the Associate Dean for International and Graduate Programs and Joseph S. Platt-Porter Wright Morris & Arthur Professor of Law at The Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law. His areas of expertise include China, foreign trade and investment, international business transactions, and international intellectual property. Professor Chow earned his B.A. and J.D. at Yale University. “China in Africa” is one of the 2013 Great Decisions topics. If you have questions about Great Decisions or how to start a discussion group, please contact Shannon McAfee, Director of Public Programs, at smcafee@columbusworldaffairs.org or 614-229-4599 ext. 402.
