Dr. Daniel Aldridge, Professor of History at Davidson College, will discuss “Race, Class, and Our Criminal Justice System” on Monday, March 23, 2015, at 7:30 pm in Hance Auditorium, Chambers Building, on the Davidson College campus. This forum is hosted by the Vann Center for Ethics and cosponsored by The Black Student Coalition. This event is FREE and open to the public; no ticket is required. Dr. Aldridge will talk about police relations with the African American community in light of recent incidents such as the Michael Brown case in Ferguson, MO, the Eric Garner case in New York, the John Crawford case in Columbus Ohio, the Tamir Rice case in Cleveland and so on. He’ll argue that improving police/community relations is crucial to reducing crime rates in working class African American communities—a necessary precondition to improving the quality of life in those communities and making them healthy and supportive environments. Currently the criminal justice system is stacked against people who bring cases against the police. Jurors, judges, and prosecutors tend to give the police the benefit of the doubt in situations of alleged police misconduct, causing many African Americans to view the criminal justice system as an adversary, even though they are far more likely to be the victims of violent crime by other African American civilians than by police brutality and misconduct. The situation calls for reforms that create independent investigation and prosecution for cases involving police misconduct.
