A brief journey of one of the most representative mexican traditions, away from the big and iconic places; in small houses and hidden streets of the great city, the traditions persist yet evolve and change at the same time, different generations of my family serve me as guides but the festivity itself is the protagonist in a journey of 24 hours between living and dead memories. The music that accompanies this video is a version of LA Llorona made by the group The Sconek T, a very amazing and talented mexican ensemble of strings, you should all check their music, it certainly is even better than my videos.

El Dia de Muertos (the Day of the Dead), declared by UNESCO as an “oral and intangible cultural heritage of humanity,” is one of Mexico’s most cherished traditions celebrated everywhere but in the colonial city of Oaxaca the cultural richness of these days is well represented by the Comparsas, theatrical performances representing the return of the dead. When the Dia de Muertos arrives the dead, after their long pilgrimage from the other life, arrive on earth tired, so they feast upon the food laid out for them at graves adorned with offerings of food, candies, liquor, cigarettes, evertything their dead enjoyed while alive. In villages outside the city of Oaxaca near the graves wonderfully decorated with candles, flowers and food, illuminated only by a sea of candles, the families speak quietly with beloved departed souls.

A video of me painting a small color study for a larger painting. This video shows me using guache on paper, but for the larger painting I'll be using oil on canvas. I'll be sure to post that video as well. It's a composition depicting the band "Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers" jamming out in the desert around a fire under the moon.
