        • A day in the deer park (Camera test)

          02:29

I got tired of waiting for the 4k Black Magic Production Camera, so I ordered a 2,5k MFT mount Cinema camera to use until the 4k version materialize. The day I recieved my camera it was sunny and I had the rest of the day off, so I decided to take the camera to the local deer park in Aarhus, Denmark to get to know it & the raw video files. Had I been a better editor, I would have made something more dynamic, but since this is just a camera test, I didn't want to use lot of time editing this piece. Edited in Final Cut Pro X & graded in Davinci Resolve. Some clips are overexposed since I wanted to see how far I could overexpose the raw files and still pull back the highlights. I used Nikon lenses on a Nikon G to MFT adapter for this informal test, mostly the 70-200mm 2,8G VR II and the 16-35mm 4G VR. I'm looking forward to getting a Metabones Speedbooster next week, to get a more S35 like look. Download the video to view it in the best quality. The amount of detail in the images is amazing considering the price of this camera. There has been mixed conditions at Brockholes this week, but things are moving along nicely and I've seen some more great crested grebes. The little egrit has also been up and down the river. Roll on summer! Two days after receiving my GH-1 camera, I shot this video in my backyard while experimenting with using my Canon EF 300mm f2.8 lens on it. Sometimes I also used a Canon 1.4x teleconverter. Focusing wasn't difficult because of the shallow depth of field, but keeping the image steady was problematic. Although the lens has image stabilization built into it, it doesn't work when the lens is attached to a non-Canon camera. I mounted the lens and camera on a gimbal head attached to a large Gitzo tripod. With the adapter that I bought to use Canon lenses on the GH-1 you can't adjust the aperture settings on the lens, so all exposure adjustment was via the shutter speed and ISO settings. I'm considering buying an old Canon FD 300mm lens so that I can adjust aperture settings (NOTE: adapted FD lens apertures are adjustable), but so far I'm pretty satisfied with using my current lens. The movie was editted with iMovie '08. No color correction was done.
