                  from John Siddique / Added

A poem written by Nobel Peace Laureate Liu Xiaobo to his wife Liu Xia. Xiaobo is in prison in China for 'inciting subversion of state power,' while Xia is under house arrest without charge. The Poem is Read by John Siddique A book of Liu Xiaobo's poems 'No Enemies, No Hatred' will be published in January. I recorded this poem as I believe that while any writer is not free to write or be read, then no writer is free. Xiaobo is not free to read this work for himself so it falls to the other poets of this world to be a voice for those who are silenced. Note - by writers I mean writers who are writing literature such as fiction, poetry and non-fiction which is not racist or does not promote hatred.

Participatory budgeting gives ordinary people direct say over local public projects and monies. Employed by cities in Latin America and Europe, Chicago's 49th Ward was the first jurisdiction in the U.S. to embrace this innovative experiment in direct democracy. Filmed during the very first year of participatory budgeting, "Democracy in Action" follows community members pitch ideas, team up with others and craft proposals for infrastructure projects – such as street and sidewalk repairs, bike lanes, and dog parks – and then invite the community to vote. The outcome was truly "democracy in action" and has continued for several years now. Director/Producer/Cinematographer: Ines Sommer. www.sommerfilmworks.com
