To be or not to be…No. This is no longer the question for me. Perhaps it should never have been. But the hopes of idealists, and yes, I am one, are often larger than what life can provide at a given moment, and the frustration of the pampered, and sorry to say that I used to be one as well, and, perhaps, I still am, is deeper than any other. And I needed time in my life to learn how to distinguish between windmills and grinders of the soul, between the real enemy and the imagined one. But now that the landmarks on the road are clear, and with them the features of my soul, the question is no longer “to be or not to be,” but: whom to be: a contented man or an ambitious one? A submissive man or a dissident? A broken man or a rebel? My choice is made. ـ

Here are selected scenes from Democracy. "Democracy" had its debut at the Brunswick Mechanics institue in April 2010. The show is hybrid theatre - incorporate data jamming to discuss the sociological ideas of information and culture in todays world. Data Jamming is the idea of using data as content and stimulus for theatrical production technique. That is lighting, sound, and projections. All these elements were linked in different ways to the data of the subject matter they were discussing. Some of the data was used in real time - the stock market, twitter streams and blog data was all streamed in real time. Other data such as the Amnesity International documents and flickr tagged images was parsed using programs written by Tim. Added to this was dynamic lighting synced to the musical phrases of the show, and even Projection mapping onto the geometric stage behind which Tim Performs. Along with Nick's performance and vocals the show is an immersive journey through political and social ideas presented in a tour de force of light and sound.

"He who examines my deeds with his eyes will not understand me. He who listens to me with his ears will not grasp my meaning. Only the soul doth comprehend. The soul of he whose senses awoke to the world, forcibly, and whose faculties matured in this world, forcibly, of he who dreamt and witnessed some of his dreams die, forcibly, yet, he still insists on living, still insists on dreaming, on doing, because determination is second nature to him, and the call of life inside of him is far stronger than the rails of death." ـ

When: July 30th 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Where: AED, Greeley Hall, 1875 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. Please join us for a talk-show style discussion on The Conspicuously Absent Fourth "D:" Democracy. The emphasis on soft power in recent years invokes the cooperation of the ‘3 Ds’: Development, Diplomacy, and Defense. Many observers note the ‘missing D’ for Democracy. The panelists will examine this topic within the context of the current Administration’s continued commitment to democracy and governance issues. President Obama’s historic speech in Ghana last year renewed the American commitment to support democratic values and institutions around the world. The recently released National Security Strategy also supports this promise: "… Our diplomacy and development capabilities must help prevent conflict, spur economic growth, strengthen weak and failing states, lift people out of poverty, combat climate change and epidemic disease, and strengthen institutions of democratic governance…" With the USAID Administrator firmly in place, the July SID-Washington Chapter event will take an in-depth look at the Administration’s approach to supporting democracy promotion, possible limits to it, and how support can evolve moving forward. Speakers: Lorne Craner, President, International Republican Institute Sarah Mendelson, Deputy Assistant Administrator, USAID, DHCA Kenneth Wollack, President, National Democratic Institute Moderator: Malcolm Butler, Senior Vice President, Emerging Markets, Management Systems International and SID-Washington Board Member
