This is not intended to be a statement in favor of or against any specific political viewpoint, but rather an illustration of the current state of American political discourse. My experience of the Tea Party event on the Boston Common on April 14, 2010, was one of bewildered amusement. Nobody was making any sense. Everyone was shouting, no one was listening, and dozens of individuals wandered the crowd in search of counter-protesters, or "infil-traitors," to argue with. Just as often, they ended up arguing with fellow Tea Party members. Some brought the mob mentality into one-on-one arguments that lasted only a few seconds before dramatically shouting their final point and disappearing into the crowd before a response could be given. While others held relatively coherent discussions - as coherent as a discussion between two people with different sets of facts can be - for as long as an hour, the end result was at best, a civil agreement to disagree. I was left, not with any answers or conclusions about the Tea Party or anything else, only a vague awareness that something was very wrong with the way Americans talk to each other about politics.
