** This clip has the correct opening intro but is presented at a lower resolution. You can see a higher resolution version here: http://vimeo.com/20223085 ** Title: Graduation Summit Version 3.0 (with Fixed Intro) Quality: Mobile (LESS than Medium) Size: 300MB File: MNallianceWithYouth-3.0_MOBILE.m4v Notes: The final clip will be HD, this Mobile Quality export is just for online review. Background: This video was pieced together from 2 different sources. A majority was shot by hand with an HD Flip cam (hence the poor audio) and a short segment was shot with an iPhone 3GS (indicated by the corresponding lower thirds). The video was originally collected very casually. It was not known at the time that the video would be distilled down and used as a record of the event. I was shooting this footage while walking around the room and the battery died midday. Therefore certain segments of the Graduation Summit simply were not captured at all. Only a few minutes of the day were captured using a tripod so the footage left to work with was raw, and the camerawork was shaky and unsteady. I did my best to stabilize the shaky segments in iMovie. I like to use animated transitions sparingly, but there were a lot of breaks in the action so it felt appropriate to increase the number of transitions in this clip. Also, the voiceover was recorded by a student on their laptop microphone (hence the audio quality of that segment). But... They say the best camera is the one you have with you, so this is what we have.

** This clip has a tiny glitch (at the 0:08 second mark) in the opening intro due to a rendering bug in iMovie when exporting at the "Medium" file size. This was beyond my control but will NOT affect the finished product. My only solution was to export the clip at a lower resolution and upload it again here: http://vimeo.com/20260968 ** Title: Graduation Summit Version 3.0 (Glitchy Intro) Quality: Medium (Greater than Mobile) Size: 300MB File: MNallianceWithYouth_3.0-MEDIUM.m4v Notes: The final clip will be HD, this Medium Quality export is just for online review. Music is a great way to approach language learning for children who have difficulty communicating. The rhythm, patterns and dynamic of singing provides a structure under the words and sentences of lyrics. This structure works to make speaking automatic. If you've learned something through music it's easier to repeat; it puts communication into a non-stress, 'produce words when you need' them mode. We've taken the idea of connecting music and language and worked with Jeremy Zmuda of 'Jeremy Plays Guitar', a musician and composer and Executive Producer and Lyricist Lizzie Bicknell to incorporate their Social Songs in classrooms for children on the Autism Spectrum, and with children with Severe Disabilities. Watch these dancing feet and happy faces! Who said school can't be fun! You can download the songs from District 75 at the following website: http://schools.nyc.gov/Offices/District75/Departments/Technology/AssistiveAdaptive/at_forms.htm##lyrical This video has a companion Pocket PD (Professional Development) pamphlet created by the Special Education District of the New York City Department of Education that can be downloaded at: http://schools.nyc.gov/NR/rdonlyres/5A8AC0BC-70D2-4BB1-8EEA-D027819B485C/171089/PPD6InvolvingtheStudents.pdf

What does the inclusion, or 'integration' of children with disabilities mean? How do the general and special education teachers manage? How do they collaborate? How are accommodations designed and implemented? This video shows a pre-school 'integrated' classroom. In it we interviewed the teachers, videotaped the students in action, and heard a poignant story told by a parent whose child is successfully included.
