I made this video of a sculpture called Warped in late May of 2013 just before packing it up to move it and my other sculptures into storage. The building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where my studio was located for 26 years, had been sold and the new owner is converting it into living spaces. This is a sculpture from 2009. I have had a longtime fascination with folding screens. They are a bridge between art and functional furnishings. Sometimes traditional Japanese and Chinese screens have painted images of people, flowing water, birds or other animals that seem to be gazing at or about to flow or fly through the real space between panels when the screens are in the typical zig-zag position. This prompted me to build folding screens that have actual elements that violate the frame in a way similar to the way pop up books work except that I wanted the elements in my screens to have a more robust physicality and to pass through the panels. This is the 3rd and largest screen that I built. Because of the size and lack of cross beam supports, it warped when I constructed the 1st panel. It is, indeed, more rickety then the smaller folding sculptures. I was upset at first. but then I saw the elegance in the way the torqued surface caught the light, so I went ahead and built 2 more panels which, obligingly, also warped. To my delight, they folded together more or less like a flat folding screen does when I attached the hinges. My method is to build the screen first, then cut into the panels and insert the renegade element. When I built the 1st screen in the series, I expected the inserted form to get crumpled like a crashed car, when I folded up the screen for the 1st time. Instead it curled up inside and reemerged intact, showing great resilience.

None of us have any single morning woken up in the same place in Universe as the day before ! When we think of traveling so it is perhaps primarily travel to o from work or vacation trip to another country we think of. But if you look at us humans here on Earth in a bigger perspective,we are all on a journey together all the time ! As the planet rotates almost 1700 km per huor (0,5 km/sek) ( less if you are not staying at the equator). It is this movement i want to show with some of the night scenes in the movie where you can see the Earth relative movements against the "fixed stars" in the night sky. This is perhaps the of our common journey we notice most clearly, then it slowly if you consider that the earth moves almost 30 km per second around our star the Sun. Then begins the really quick trip when our solar-system travels through (our galaxy) Milky Way at a speed of 220 km/sec heading towards the star Vega near the constellation Hercules. Since moving throughout our galaxy the Milky Way towards our neighbor, the Andromeda galaxy at a speed of 300 km/ sec. So even if we can not travel because we might bi tied to a hospital bed or cannot afford or do not want to travel so we remain constantly on a physical journy through the universe ! This movie is an attempt to show our planets rotating by constantly pointing the camera at the same fixed stars and then fast time course. About 24 hours(for ten nights in Mars 2014) shooting resulted in these film that appears almost 400 times faster towards the actual time,in order to be able to see the earth´s movement against the fixed stars. The Museum of Applied Arts Vienna [http://www.mak.at/aktuell] and departure Vienna [http://www.departure.at/] organized a workshop on 2013-09-18,19! The topic of it was to think about mobility in the future and the function of cycling in it. With our leader Sandra Richter (http://www.sandra-y-richter.com/) we created different scenarios and possibilities how the bicycle could be. During this workshop we created also this video. It tells the story about an community called WeBike, which we created to emphasize the value of cycling inside urban spaces and learning. Thanks for the workshop to all related people, especially to the people from the workshop, and the people who have organized it. credits: music: The Best Pessimist - Walking With Happiness used equipment: CANON EOS 500D BODY 10-20mm F4,0-5,6 EX DC / HSM 18-200mm F3,5-6,3 II DC OS HSM
