This is my 1 min video montage submission to the 2014 Monterey Shootout. It is always a challenge to shoot in Monterey, let alone shoot underwater and get it all done with tight time constraints! I love wide angle, but the critter opportunities, the visibility, and surge, always play havoc in a competition like this. I've been diving Monterey for a long time, and have never encountered a full size Mola Mola (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_sunfish) in the wild, and fin to fin this one was 6+ feet! When I saw the Mola, my jaw dropped as I could not believe what was in front me! I put my mouth back together and went into action photographer mode. Note: The Mola footage is left out of this submission, as when I went to do my editing, the Mola footage was completely blurry. Side note; seeing a grown man crying is ugly.. I have my memory intact, but somehow this rare event + competition potential gem, was not meant to be. When I told a good friend of mine what happened he said "You know what I do when things like that happen to me, I take all those blown moments and put them in a folder. When I go out and shoot the next time I review my blown folder files, so that I don't make those mistakes again!" Thank you Berkley for that.

Back in 2009 I was invited to join Chip and Susan Scarlett on a wonderful friends and family trip to Raja Ampat, which are the Islands off West Papua. While waiting for my gracious friends to fly into Bali, I spent several days touring the local area. You will find a humble, sweet, and kind people in Bali that love to share their culture. The local people don't say "Goodbye", but instead say "Until Next Time!" I've already been back to Bali, and hope to be back many times more! When my friends arrive, we fly onto Makassar for a day, then flying on to Sorong (West Papua) to board the Cheng Ho for 12 days of diving the beautiful Raja Ampat! The underwater region is rich in beautiful hard and soft corals, anemone fish of ever kind, Wobbegong Sharks, many varieties of Pygmy Seahorse, Nudibranch, and on and on! You really can't absorb all that Raja has to offer in one trip, so I hope to return again, and soon!

What a beautiful and peaceful trip through Alaska, onboard the Nautilus Swell. We covered a 1000 Nautical miles in 14 days, starting at Sitka, and finishing the loop at Juneau. We dove, hiked, swam in the ice fields, kayaked along Grizzly's, swam with Salmon, and watched Humpbacks! What a wonderful trip in one of the world's last frontiers! This was a great Backscatter trip, during the July time of year.

The Monterey Shootout is an annual event that brings together underwater photographers from all over California, and some of the surrounding states. Folks compete head to head in video and still photography for top prizes that include exotic trip destinations around the world. The Northern California Underwater Photographic Society (NCUPS) runs the Shootout, and terrific sponsors like Backscatter and Reef and Rainforest, and many others, help run and support the shoot. (see http://www.montereyshootout.com/) for complete list of sponsors and contest results. Without NCUPS and all the wonderful sponsors, we would not have such a cool event. In addition, the event draws judges that donate their time to the event, and present amazing life work portfolios! The event truly draws a vast eclectic group of people, for a very enjoyable weekend of competition, seeing old friends, and making new friends! The event is personally very challenging to me in many ways. I compete in both video and still photography, and typically I have less than 4 hours to sort through all my video and photo work, to first find the winners, then work up the winners, and then of course somehow edit and tell a story with my video! You can find me running to the entry drop off point with only minutes remaining every year! I thrive and love the artistic value we are blessed to work with in underwater photography. My model in the video is my long time girlfriend Corrine. The last couple years I've talked her into getting into the 48 degree water to help me with the creative process. Modeling in cold, high surge water is a tough job, but Corrine and I still love each other after the process, which says a lot! : )

This was a wonderful dive trip to Maldives aboard the Manthiri in 2009. The Backscatter group primarily dove "Manta Bay" also known as Hanifaru Bay in the Baa Atoll region of the Maldives. We hit the area at a prime time, as it was completely going off with hundreds of Manta's in feeding frenzy mode. When the current was right, Krill would funnel into the bay, and somehow the Manta's knew the Krill was there. We also had some great encounters with Whale Sharks! In one encounter we started out with 12 photographers chasing down one Whale Shark. By the end of the dive we estimated 5-6 Whale Sharks around us! It was just crazy... And of course there was so much else for us to see. I look forward to going back!
