Design Within Reach is thrilled to introduce the result of a very special collaboration between Jens Risom and Chris Hardy: Ven Storage Collection. Named for the Danish word for “friend,” Ven started when Risom came to us with the idea of working with another designer to refashion one of his original cabinet series. We suggested Chris Hardy, who designed his first piece for us in 2012, the Helix Table. Once the duo agreed on modularity and materials, they homed in on the details. Ven pushes customizability to the fore while staying true to Risom’s aesthetic of warm woods, balanced proportions and meticulously aligned hardware.

Learn about Brooklyn-based design group Egg Collective. Founded in 2011, Egg Collective is the creative home of designers Stephanie Beamer, Crystal Ellis and Hillary Petrie, who met as design students at Washington University in St. Louis and have been working together ever since. In this informative, meditative exploration of their work, the Brooklyn-based design group explains how they approach projects, their values around design and craft and even the definition of their name. “Sometimes people think Egg is a collective of individual ideas,” says Stephanie Beamer, “for us, it’s a product of our collective design consciousness.” While their work transcends any reductive definition of “women in design,” the approach of this all-female collective has a decidedly feminine slant. They focus not only on the details and craftsmanship of their heirloom-quality pieces but also on collaboration, support and the enduring quality of good design. “Everybody can remember a piece of furniture from their childhood,” they say. “That’s what we’re going for.” Learn all about this innovative collective, which is rooted in classic midcentury modern design values, in this informative short film by Design Within Reach.

Watch the Big Bow Project: See how Snarkitecture wrapped an Eames Lounge Chair. Brooklyn-based Snarkitecture is a collaborative and experimental practice operating in territories between art and architecture. In this short film, co-founder and partner Alex Mustonen tells us how Snarkitecture is interested in “transforming the familiar into the extraordinary.” That’s exactly what they did while trying to answer the question Design Within Reach posed: How would you wrap an Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman? Wanting the instantly familiar form to remain visible, they carefully disassemble the chair and ottoman, then shrink-wrap it in high-gloss paper. Once reassembled, the chair reveals its shape yet remains hidden. The perfect wrap for the “OCD gift-wrapper,” explains Mustonen. We asked three other design teams the same question.

Watch the Big Bow Project: See how Print All Over Me wrapped an Eames Lounge Chair. Print All Over Me is a creative community of people turning virtual ideas into real-world objects. Its mission is to provide tools that allow anyone to create, share, own and produce clothing and objects for fashion and home. In this short film, co-founder Jesse Finkelstein describes their style as “playful, uncanny, witty.” They took this approach in answering the question Design Within Reach posed: How would you wrap and Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman? Their playful idea was to “make one giant bean bag – a chair within a chair.” To do so, they took splatter-painted canvases, added the Print All Over Me logo and artwork, then crafted two fabric cubes and filled them with packing peanuts to create their beanbag chair shape. “There’s something very approachable about what we’ve done,” says Finkelstein. “It’s so soft and playful.” We asked three other design teams the same question.

Watch the Big Bow Project: See how Dusen Dusen wrapped an Eames Lounge Chair. Each season, Brooklyn-based Dusen Dusen releases a collection of easy, wearable silhouettes in bold prints created by founder Ellen Van Dusen, who describes her work as “colorful, playful and fun.” Design Within Reach asked Van Dusen: How would you wrap and Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman? In this short film, see how she answers it. To begin with, Van Dusen visited her favorite store in New York, Canal Plastics, where she stocked up on some boldly colored plexiglass panels. Her “aha” moment came when she realized she could drill holes in the panels and stitch the pieces together, like fabric. She combined that with some of her own textiles for contrast, creating an architectural wrapping that’s well rooted in modern design. We asked three other design teams the same question.

Watch the Big Bow Project: See how Craig and Karl wrapped an Eames Lounge Chair. Craig Redman and Karl Maier live in different parts of the world (New York and London), but they collaborate daily to create bold work filled with simple messages, executed in a thoughtful and often humorous way. In fact, Redman tells us in this short film, if he could use three words to describe their work, it would be “bright, bold and colorful.” That approach comes to life in this creative project, in which the duo addresses the question Design Within Reach asked them: How would you wrap an Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman? Their answer, captured in this short film, was to combine acrylic and plywood into a “wrapping installation” that could transport the iconic chair from Redman’s home in New York all the way to Maier in London. We asked three other design teams the same question.
