This short film explores Manitoga –industrial designer Russel Wright’s little-known greatest work. As we’re taken on a visual tour of his verdant estate, our assistant director of operations Lori Moss explains how it came to be. We see his stunning creation on a bright white, snow-covered day, the beautiful structure set into the landscape so that it truly seems a part of it. The Design Center at Philadelphia University recently unveiled Lace In Translation in September 2009. The exhibition explores the crossroads of traditional lace and modern industrial manufacturing techniques. Internationally-recognized artists and designers Cal Lane, Tord Boontje, and Demakersvan have created site-specific installations located throughout the Center's grounds and galleries, on the campus of Philadelphia University. Their work fuses classic hand craftsmanship with modern-day production techniques. The Design Center’s historic Quaker Lace Company collection is the inspiration for the artists’ present-day reinventions of lace. The Design Center at Philadelphia University is a rare institution solely devoted to design, illustrating how design shapes everyday life. Through its presentation of gallery exhibitions, enrichment programs, lectures and special events – such as DesignPhiladelphia – the Center reflects Philadelphia University's extensive design curriculum: encompassing architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, graphic design, textile design, fashion, interactive media and industrial design. The Design Center at Philadelphia University is located at 4200 Henry Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19144 and is open Monday through Friday 10 am – 4 pm and Saturdays 11 am – 4 pm. TDC is closed on all academic and national holidays. Admission is free. For more information, call (215) 951-2860 or visit www.philau.edu/DesignCenter.
