        • How does Ya’axché's work benefit local communities??

Ya'axché was established as a conservation organization in 1998 which was tasked with the protection of the Golden Stream Corridor Preserve. The idea was to ensure that some land was set aside to ensure that the essential ecosystem services such as clean water and wildlife populations are maintained. Ya'axché quickly realised that protected area management is not just about managing the land outside the protected area. In fact it is about working within those communities living around these protected areas and to ensure that we all realise that we are working to the same goal. Namely, that these natural resources and the ecosystem services that they provide are maintained for the present generation and for future generations. This short film kindly made by Victoria Welch (ProWorld) is an introduction to this community work that Ya’axché has been involved in over the past 13 years. You can see the broad range of projects that are underway that support the principles of sustainable agriculture. Also highlighted are the community development projects we have been promoting, from scholarships for local students through to leadership training and involving everyone from newly established women's groups through to commercial citrus farmers. It is often easy to just focus on the problems and challenges when working in conservation and sustainable development. This film shows that we have a lot to be proud of here at Ya'axché and that it is good to focus on our achievements, whilst recognizing that our work represents the first steps along the path toward sustainable use of Belize’s wealth of natural resources.
