Greg Lynn is founder of the Greg Lynn FORM office, an o. Univ. Professor of Architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, a studio professor at the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture, and the Davenport Visiting Professor at the Yale School of Architecture. He was the winner of the Golden Lion at the 2008 Venice Biennale of Architecture and in 2010 he was named a Fellow by United States Artists. Greg Lynn has been at the cutting edge of design in both architecture and design culture in general when it comes to the use of the computer. The buildings, projects, publications, teachings and writings associated with his office have been influential in the acceptance and use of the advanced technologies germane to the aeronautic, automobile and film industries. His architectural designs have received numerous awards and have been exhibited in both architecture and art museums worldwide. http://www.glform.com http://addlab.aalto.fi

////////////////////////////////////////////////// Evolutionary Design: The Natural Model for Architecture 03.12.2014 ////////////////////////////////////////////////// This talk focuses on the environmental, social and economic context and purpose for the application of evolutionary digital design methods. Evolutionary design explores multiple alternative solutions rather than rationalising a single proposal. In an analogy to evolutionary and developmental processes, a conceptual generic idea or schema is encoded in digital form to create a population of genetic code scripts that are then developed in an environment and subject to analysis and selection in a cyclical manner. Divergent evolution can be used to restlessly generate and explore new possibilities, or iterative convergent evolution can be used to achieve optimal environmental performance. Selection can be natural on the basis of performance analysis or artificial on the basis of the judgment of the user, client or designer. There have been several recent books and compilations of essays on the topics of digital, generative and evolutionary design and the speaker will speculate about the emergence of a new design theory. John Frazer is Professor of Evolutionary Digital Design at the European Graduate School. He is acknowledged as the leader in the field of generative design and was the originator of the Evolutionary Digital Design Process and inventor of the field of Tangible Interfaces. He was Head of three international design schools in Ireland, China and Australia. He was Chairman and CEO of the award winning Autographics Software development company that pioneered microcomputer based design systems. He is now Chair of the Frazer Foundation for Accelerating Architecture. His extensively published research at Cambridge University Mathematical Laboratory, the Architectural Association, the Design Technology Research Centre (which he founded in Hong Kong) and the Centre for Complex Urban Systems Design in Australia, embraces intelligent and interactive design, participatory and co-operative design and computer generated design. His book An Evolutionary Architecture (1995) is the seminal work in the domain.

from Center for Architecture / Added

Kohn Pedersen Fox’s design philosophy is firmly rooted in the belief that success is the result of collaboration and ongoing dialogue. Within KPF, the implementation of this approach emphasizes an open exchange of ideas both within the firm and, more importantly, between the full range of people and disciplines that contribute to the development of a project. This lecture introduces various case studies of KPF projects, with a particular focus on the use of parametric, data-driven design processes formulated through utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM), computational analysis, and studies applied from design conception through execution. The projects maximize the full breadth of knowledge and experience of KPF’s international staff and offices, where BIM-centric designs are collaboratively and simultaneously developed, in real-time, as a single team approach. KPF’s BIM models not only establish a database of a given design’s information but perform and contribute to a lively and responsive design process. Environmental analysis and data, combined with social and cultural contexts, strive to improve the efficiency and performance goals sought in the design. This strategy is reinforced by incorporating technologies which help to maximize occupant comfort while lowering long-term operating and maintenance costs, reduce non-renewable energy consumption, and minimize construction waste and environmental impact. Seamless workflows have been developed to translate design geometries into multiple software platforms, exchanged seamlessly via BIM from conception to design development, construction, fabrication and operation. In this presentation, a KPF team that has developed various aspects of the firm’s research and digital design initiatives shall present the application and utilization of their efforts throughout the body of the firm’s work. Organized by the AIANY Technology Committee This event has been made possible and kept free by the generous support of ABC-Imaging.
