Powered by dinoflagellates (bioluminescent plankton), the Dino Pet is a living (not-technically-breathing) pet that gives you a wondrous light show at night when you play with it. All it asks for in return is indirect sunlight during the day, the occasional snack, and a little shake. We like to think of it as lighting in a bottle, only without the pesky thunder.

THE WORLD’S FIRST BIOLUMINESCENT PETS The Dino Pet is fun, renewable, and magical. It redefines the whole Plant-Pet paradigm. It’s a living pet that requires indirect sunlight during the day and gives you a wondrous light show when you play with it at night. TEACHING CHILDREN ABOUT NATURE Through crowd funding, we aim to create an interactive toy that teaches kids that magic is found in understanding the world around you. To understand and to work with Nature is paramount to living more sustainably. Harnessing biology to produce energy, medicines and entertainment is the future. Before discovering a pet, we applied these awesome bioluminescent creatures in our bio light. Our hope is the Dino Pet will inspire young minds to take an interest in biology and shape the way we live.

Here at BioPop, we're all about serious science. That's why one magical night in September we decided to attempt to answer one of science's oldest, most-pressing questions: How incredible would it be to play in a pool filled with the dinoflagellates inside the Dino Pet (http://biopop.com/products/dino-pet)? (Hint: super-duper, insanely incredible!) This video pretty much confirmed our hypothesis. Next up — an Olympic-sized pool! The bioluminescence in this video is 100% natural, and comes from marine phytoplankton called dinoflagellates. There are over 2,000 varieties of dinoflagellates, but the species shown in this video is called Pyrocystis fusiformis. Learn more about the science behind the Dino Pet here http://biopop.com/blogs/news/15217785-the-dino-pet-explained Disclaimer: No Dino Pets were harmed during the making of this video.
