Individual use is freely permitted but any institution, governmental or otherwise, must contact the filmmakers and receive permission before screening, viewing, or usage in any way. On November 20th, 2009 students occupied Wheeler Hall at the University of California, Berkeley campus. They locked themselves into the second floor of the building and called for an end to the continued fee increases, the re-hiring of laid-off workers, and other demands stemming from the University's ongoing assault on the very nature of a public education. Before long hundreds and then thousands of supporters had gathered outside the building to support the occupiers, forming picket lines and challenging the police at every opportunity. All exits to Wheeler Hall were blockaded by supporters to prevent the occupiers from being arrested, while inside the police hammered the barricaded doors and threatened the students with arrests, beatings, and felonies. However, after twelve hours of occupation it had become clear that the University had to back down. If the UC police had attempted to drag the student activists out of the building a riot surely would have ensued, and the police were forced to allow the occupiers to walk out into the cheering crowd after only being cited with misdemeanors. While their specific demands were not met, students are hailing this as a major victory, the first round in a new movement for free education and in opposition to the government's policies of forced austerity and privatization.

Beka Economopoulos, a member of the Brooklyn-based group Not An Alternative, interprets a moving sculpture by artists at the Toronto G20 using the “Black Bloc” method of sculpting. The piece entitled “The Sculpture of Exception,” ironically turns political theorist Carl Schmitt’s “state of exception” on its head. The state of exception, according to Schmitt, frees the executive from any legal restraints to its power that would normally apply in a given crisis situation or any situation where power needs self-legitimization. “The Sculpture of Exception” illustrates that collective bodies can also operate outside legal restraints when governments perpetuate crisis through capital consolidation and austerity. The piece draws attention to the possibilities for refusal and non-compliance in the face of such given force and shows a dialectic that forms within this context.

Low Coal is an exploration of what it's like to live with the coal industry. Telling the stories of activists and injured miners, Low Coal makes the case that strong and resilient Appalachian communities are paying a heavy price for the benefits to the region that the coal industry provides. This price is paid by the people in the areas around the mines, whether or not they have a formal relationship with the mining industry. The film profiles UMWA members who have worked to improve conditions in the deep mines, and shows what it was like for the community around the Upper Big Branch mine disaster. It also shows what it's like for people who are having their family histories and communities destroyed by Mountaintop Removal. The film makes a strong effort to distinguish between purely profit-driven mine companies, like Massey Energy, and the individuals who are tasked with doing difficult, dangerous, and thankless work of mining coal.

Interview recorded in London in June 2009. The ALF - Animal Liberation Front - is a movement of people aiming to liberate animals. Its activists are often called 'extremists' or 'terrorists' although no harm to any living being has ever been caused by them. Here, former ALF activist Keith Mann talks openly about how a higher moral law led him to take action against laws defending useless cruelty, animal abuse and human ignorance - all of which very often are done in the name of progress, science, fashion, entertainment and diet. Using animals is an integral part of the system we live in - but does it mean that it is right ?... and that we can't change it?
