http://www.mkjohnsonmusic.com Vessels: 2010 New Zealand International Arts Festival Music by Mark K. Johnson VESSELS was inspired by Dante’s early-14th century epic poem, Divine Comedy, which predicted that directly opposite Jerusalem in the great oceans of the southern hemisphere lies an island, above which shines a constellation of four stars in the shape of a cross. Atop this island sits the original Garden of Paradise. The mythological location of this island is where New Zealand now lies. According to Dante, an angel in the form of a divine white bird eternally pilots vessels of souls from the underworld to the island shores. Ripples of light emanate from the vessels, so radiant that the eye can barely endure them. (Purgatorio, Canto 2 of 33) Original music by American composer Mark K. Johnson established the sounds of a ghost vessel silently approaching the shore, and then eternally receding once again. The music contained the whispers of the tide; the sounds of the sea repeating in endless cycles; the haunting echoes of a ship’s bell in the distance, warning of obstacles. The movements of visitors and the overtones of the music created vibrations within the vessels and resulted in changing patterns of water ripples above. René lives a dull, uneventful life in a subterranean and futuristic world. He is about to be promoted and transferred from Circle One to Circle Six, when a series of mysterious mounds start to appear systematically in his apartment. - "César Pesquera redefines the spaces of a hotel in Barcelona inspired by Dante's Inferno in his experimental science-fiction film equally influenced by Tarkovski's Solaris and Kubrik's 2001" CAHIERS DU CINEMA "The set design is beautiful and the attention to detail is super high, luckily this never distracts from René’s journey, partly because Pablo Menasanch playing René is so arresting and writer / director César Pesquera has done such a great job setting and maintaining the tone." FORMFIFTYFIVE "In the realm of ultra-rational asepsis, it is the space that takes over the body, like an invisible hand that transforms, little by little, the nondescript to latent tragedy." BROAD.CAT "I love the feeling of not knowing exactly what is happening but at the same time knowing it is something very profound." QUAYOLA, artist. - SELECTED SCREENINGS 2011. Alcine Festival. © Maeve Humphreys, 2013 The title of this piece, Das Unheimlich means unhomely or uncanny in English. This piece is based on the seven deadly sins and each character is inspired by each one of the sins. The seven deadly sins include sloth, vanity, greed, gluttony, wrath, envy and lust. However, the objective of this piece is not to represent each of the sins faithfully; rather the concept of the seven deadly sins provides a vehicle from which to formulate characters and sequences. It is unimportant what the seven sins are or what sins each character represents. This piece is concerned with human nature and the experience of being human. In particular the work explores the aspects of human behaviour that are autonomous versus those which are conscious.

This is the final part of three mini episodes of our post-apocalyptic short film ANATHEMA (2011 - 2014) You can watch Part II here: vimeo.com/86237545 You can watch Part I here: vimeo.com/72594873 Check out the two minute teaser - trailer over here: https://vimeo.com/42994474 Summary Daniel, a soldier, wakes up from a nightmare and finds himself in a ruined and abandoned city. Without any memory of what happened he starts looking for his team, one of which is very dear to him. After finding a clue he meets a lonely pastor. The man, introducing himself as Virgil, tells Daniel he might know where his teammates went. Although Daniel remains vigilant, he knows he has no choice but to follow him through a world that isn't what it looks like. The film was made by a small group of student graduates in the course of three years. They started shooting back in 2011, but during the last day of an eight day shoot the footage got stolen from their car. Only two months passed after the theft when the group returned to Belgium and started shooting the film again, entirely. After that, the film's director spent two years to finance the VFX and finish the film in his spare time. It was shot entirely with a Canon t2i (550D) with Contax Zeiss lenses.
