    • Panasonic DMC-GH2 - testing old lenses

Panasonic DMC-GH2 - this must be one hell of a camera! I've been waiting for mine to show up in Poland for over two months, calling every reseller I know every other day. Finally, unable to get it, I pulled the trigger on USA version offered on Ebay by some Spanish guy. Three days ago it finally arrived! Probably the most exciting thing for an old guy like me is to be able to hook up all the 'legacy' lenses I haven't been able to use since my DOF adapter retired. Originally I wanted to use vari-nd filters, but the optical quality of mine turned out to be quite bad. To do the justice to the lenses I had to use fast shutter. Need to get good hot mirror ND soon - waiting for those Schneider Platinum... This is the result of two days of testing it in natural light. Wish I had more time to shoot, but weather here in Warsaw is really awful (shower every thirty minutes). Having say that, I already have my opinion about GH2 (nothing revealing, I guess...): What I like: + the fact it's not 7D :) + ability to use almost every lens + resolving power (shocking if you move from 7d) + lack of aliasing + exposure aids: histogram, highlight (zebra-like) + touch-screen focus assist (magnify) + viewfinder (even though I'm very sensitive to those DLP-type devices, it's like using real video camera again) + HDMI output (I can finally use my SmallHD!) + 4 custom white balance 'slots' and the way they are filled (no ploughing through menu) What I don't like: - the fact it's not 7D :) - dynamic range (it always disappoints me) - colors (simply wrong, no matter how I set it up; it's not matter of white-balancing and it's very hard to correct this in post) - the fact ex tele-converter cannot be activated when external monitor is used. Some shots have been graded, other have not.

Sacré GH2 ! (first hands-on with different lenses, different modes) Just received the new GH2 (thanks to Michel Ponomarenko from Panasonic) ! This is a quick test and editing with it. I have the opportunity of having the leica 45mm 2.8 lens from Panasonic, a very good lens, and it's doing macro ! I also test the crop 1:1 GH2 option, it's very useful, especially for avoiding the vignetting from C-mount lens ! I have also tested the 80% slow motion mode, there is no sound on this mode. I also test with my new C-mount Canon 35mm 1.2, a very interesting lens, but the rear is too large, so I did "lens wacking" (detached lens). 1080i manual mode 80% slow mode 24P mode crop 1:1 tests Edited on Premiere CS5, exported on 24P sequence No CC music : Dimitri From Paris "Sacré Français !" lenses : Panasonic Leica 45mm 2.8 Canon FD 28mm 2.8 (thanks to Christophe) C-mount Schneider Kreuznach 25mm 1.4 C-mount Fujia 35mm 1.7 C-mount zoom no name 17-102 2.0 C-mount Canon 35mm 1.2

I was so impressed with the look of this footage I shot a few days ago that I thought it a good idea to compare the different 'looks' or 'presets' available in the Panasonic GH2. (also because I accidentally changed a setting and forgot which one I used!) I shot this in full HD with the Lumix 20mm 1.7 and fader ND wide open. It's all straight out of the camera but I did lower the brightness by two nudges in FCP on the Nostalgic and Nature shots because they seemed too bright. The settings for 'my film' are: Contrast 0 Sharpness -1 Saturation 0 NR 0 (spectacular, eh?;-) www.filmersblog.com www.imaginevideo.nl

Took my son out to the 'skate-pleintje' (skate square) in the neighborhood. A bunch of kids, boys around the age of my son, were hanging out and skating. Nice kids, having a good time. I just wanted to take a few shots of the action & some skating but it became more than that. When I came home and looked at the shots it felt -excusez le mot- 'filmic'. (There is something about this lens, the pancake Lumix 20mm 1.7. I talked about it in a post a few days ago: how can something be sharp and soft at the same time? Well, this lens demonstrates it.) Maybe it was the light on this day and the way I was able to control it with the Fader ND filter that made this footage stand out. The colors and warmth. The photogenic boys. The sound and movement. The special combination of it all somehow makes it more than just a few shots of some kids skating. A short visual on comraderie, playing from dawn to sunset, about careless summerdays. This could be anywhere and about any boy in the world. Watch in fullscreen HD glory! Shot on a: Panasonic GH2 + Lumix 20mm 1.7, Fader ND filter No external mic (unfortunately) www.filmersblog.com www.imaginevideo.nl

This location exercises a camera's control of aliasing, morie, and chromatic aberration. On different weekends, a Canon EOS 7D, Panasonic HDC-TM700 and Panasonic DMC-GH2 were used to shoot three separate projects. This is the Panasonic DMC-GH2 result. The GH2 suffered little of the aliasing and morie of the 7D, and none of the TM700 chromatic aberration. One of finest true ghost towns in the American West, Vulture City grew up around the mine discovered by Henry Wickenburg. Twelve miles southwest of the city that now bears Wickenburg’s name, the Vulture Mine and Vulture City once had a population of almost 5,000 souls. Its history was marked by violence and tragedy. Eighteen of Vulture City’s former residents swung to eternity at the end of a hangman’s noose dangling from the branches of the ancient ironwood tree that still thrives next to the ruins of Henry Wickenburg’s old cabin. More died in robberies or through many other acts of terminal lawlessness. A few of those souls are said to haunt the many buildings of the decaying town.
