My life’s been a little rough around the edges. I didn’t have a storybook childhood. No one in my family had ever gone to college. And it’s still kind of mind blowing for me to think that I’m actually here in college, halfway across the country from my home in California. But I’ve experienced a warm family aspect at Dordt. It didn’t take me long to refer to Dordt as my home. It’s super welcoming and encouraging. Just walking around campus, you get friendly smiles from pretty much everyone. You feel encouraged in the classroom with your profs getting to know you, and checking in on you whether it’s academic or personal. In chapel, it’s been so encouraging for me. It’s like the chaplain is talking right at me and he knows my needs and my heart. It’s made me want to work hard to learn all I can, and to be a role model. Now I want to encourage others, as a teacher and a coach. I’m Tanya Thalen, and this is how we do college at Dordt.

Dordt recruited me to play football, and I agreed to come because they were explicit in making Christ the center of the football program and very clear about growing football players to pursue Christ. I’ve majored in theology and initially I had a fear that it would be very, very academic: we would look at the Bible and turn it into an academic work. That’s not the heart of the theology department here. They don’t separate academics from service. They’re building disciples who want to serve, who want to be relational and dynamic, passionate about people. After four years here, I can truly say: if you are seeking a place that can instill in you a desire to seek the Lord, a college that puts Christ at the forefront in all area, all subjects, all sports, a place that will tell you who you really are as the son or daughter of the King, and a school that will really stretch you academically, spiritually, in all ways...then you are wise to come here. It’s a God-driven community to grow up and learn in. I’m Sam Ashmore, and this is how we do college at Dordt.

What do you want to be when you grow up? What will you do? What’s the real purpose of your life? Big questions and you can explore them pretty much anywhere, any time. But we know a place where students and professors and staff work together to find great answers. It’s a place to search, to stretch, to see the possibilities. The campus and community are welcoming and encouraging. The academics are engaging and challenging, preparing you to be think critically, deeply. The learning and living experience here is collaborative and dynamic. And the college’s commitment to Christian character and virtues gives shape to everything we strive to be and do. In class. On the stage. In the dorms. On the court. In chapel. Or relaxing with friends off campus. The best four years of your life -- so far. Dordt College. This is how we DO college.

I came here because Dordt really fit me and my personality, my outlook on life. Initially, I didn’t want to go to a Christian college, but when I visited I was blown away by the passion and mission for engaging students and Dordt’s hands-on approach for integrating Christianity into all facets of life. When I visited the digital media program, and the music department, all the academic offerings combined to knock it out of the park. Now that I’ve lived it for a couple of years, I’m even more impressed. Dordt’s equipping me with the skills to not only apply my knowledge, but to learn and adapt and adjust to new realities. The goal here is to bring God the most glory. The professors don’t teach us what to think, but how to think. It’s absolutely an engaging education that helps me evaluate the deeper questions, and encounter life in all of its fullness and its fallenness. It’s exciting to devote four years of my life to really learning at a high level and making the most of it. I’m Nathan Walter, and this is how we do college at Dordt.

Music inspires me. It makes up the rhythm of my life in college, from early morning to very late at night. I practice—a lot. I give lessons. I take lessons. Sometimes, it’s just me and the instrument. But much of the time, I’m practicing and making music with others, and learning from them. Here, I’ve discovered I grow far more in community and in collaboration with professors and students. The melody is richer when there are many other parts coming together in harmony. I’ve learned so much here—both about others and about myself. I’ve been stretched to think deeply, to challenge more, to grasp what’s at the core of learning and living, to find and fulfill my purpose. Dordt’s provided a supportive community, as well as the courage and the tools, to face tough issues and to make good choices. We’re pushed hard to wrestle with new thoughts and to dig into ideas. It’s important to know that the academics are rigorous enough to warrant the dollars we spend on it. I’m Leanna Bentz, and this is how we do college at Dordt.

In high school, I was an independent learner and generally a bit of a leader. But at Dordt, learning is something we do in community—in teams and in groups. So it was challenging at first to have to depend on my teammates and others in the group. And it was an adjustment for me to ask, How can I not be the leader, but a contributing member? I’ve come to absolutely love group projects. It’s smart preparation for the world we’re going to live in since so few jobs or tasks are just you alone, on a island. I’ve learned so much here. I’m doing printmaking. Wow, I never thought I could do art. I was scared of it. But Dordt encourages you to try something new. I always thought education was predictable—you graduate, become a teacher, you get your classroom. I’ve been challenged to look at what is my role as a Christian educator? How can i make a difference? And I’ve come to trust and to remain hope-filled that we can dream big and make changes and be influencers wherever we end up. I’m Heidi de Waal, and this is how we do college at Dordt.

As an international student, I’ve been overwhelmed with how welcoming Dordt has been. I have a magnificent host family. I always have somewhere to go. There is always someone who is willing to extend Christian hospitality to me. I wanted to come to a college that wasn’t too big, or too overwhelming, and I wanted a Christian environment. I didn’t want to be sheltered, but I wanted a firm foundation before going to medical school and getting unleashed into the world. I didn’t know much about Dordt, but I thought it would be a good fit. Since I came here, I’ve grown in my ability to identify what it is I believe, and to be able to articulate that. My professors have helped me integrate my faith in everything I do. Through the years, I’ve developed good friendships with both international and American students. I’ve been involved in many college activities and groups, including Students Without Borders. I’m confident that I’m being well prepared for success in medical school, and I hope to go back to my country to set up clinics in rural areas. I’m Deborah Tyokighir, and this is how we do college at Dordt.

The 4th of July is my absolute favorite holiday, so what better way to commemorate this year's Independence Day than with a montage of some of the activities that took place over the weekend? Filmed entirely with GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition camera. Music by Calvin Harris - Summer. I do not own the rights, clearly.
