A film made FOR thousands of Congolese refugees living in Kala and Mwange refugee camps, Zambia in 2009. It documents the repatriation process, imagery from returnee areas, and messages from repatriates, family members and friends. The film contributed to the repatriation of over 8,000 refugees to Katanga Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo following ten years of asylum in the refugee camps. It complimented "go-and-see" programs, offering an encouraging and hopeful perspective around the inherently difficult process of repatriating and rebuilding lives with very little.

For my work improving health infrastructure in Congo I often travel deep into the interior where there are little resources. I am always sure to stop by the local health centers to photograph new mothers along with other patients. Most of these people never even seen a photo of themselves. I am now traveling with a Canon Selphy Printer so I can give the mamas a copy of themselves with their newborn. This was my first recipient.

An adaptation of a scene from Mike Nichols "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?". The brief was to reinterpret a particular scene from the film. I was given a week to make this film. I decided to look at a very different but all to similar relationship dynamic between America and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Specifically looking at the special relationship America had with the DRC's President, Mobutu Sese Sek for over three decades.

FUTURE CITIES Where will it happen in 2025? Future Cities explores the next generation of cities in video, words and pictures. More than half of the world’s population now live in cities, with the number of urban residents increasing by 200 thousands every day. Over 70% of the global population will be living in urban areas by 2050. Everyone knows that Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai and Mumbai are booming, which cities will challenge them when it comes to creativity, economic growth, entrepreneurship and innovation? Where will it all happen in 2025 or 2040? With this question in mind the Dutch photographer Yvonne Brandwijk and journalist Stephanie Bakker travel to the next generation of cities. Cities behind the obvious: from the upcoming Silicon Valley of South America (Medellin/Colombia) to the next African fashion city (Kinshasa/Congo). The choice for a Future City is based on economic and demographic factors, but our search widerns its perspective to enter the personal worlds of those behind the statistics of growth and urbanisation. We take you to the heart of emerging cities. To the inside stories of the people who are leading the transition in tomorrow’s cities. To pioneers, visionaries and young talent who will determine their cities future. Into their lives and dreams as they seek inspiring solutions for urban challenges. And we will share their struggles – urbanisation has its downsides too. But above all we will capture the ambition, hope and prosperity of the world’s most exciting and emerging urban areas. Future Cities is a idea of Yvonne Brandwijk and Stephanie Bakker in co-production with de Volkskrant.
