These days, they look like strangely shaped hills, green and inviting in rural Illinois. But at its peak, Cahokia was the epicenter of ancient Mississippian culture. With a population of 20,000 in 1250 A.D., Cahokia was larger than London was at the same time. The Missouri Drone Journalism Program visited the site while a crew of archeologists from Italy unearthed new clues that could explain just how this metropolis was organized. Aerial footage taken with remotely operated drones shows the geographical context of the site.

What kind of journalism can get you personally shut down by the federal government? This question may seem like the beginning of a bad joke, but for Matt Waite, professor at University of Nebraska's College of Mass Communications, the situation was no laughing matter. In 2008 he received a letter from the feds that he would need to shut down his "Drone Journalism Lab" unless he planned to get permits for his remote-controlled flying video journalism drones.
