                    • The Green Drought - Bundelkhand

                      from Prashanth Vishwanathan / Added

In Bundelkhand between the years 1999 and 2008, the average number of rainy days per year has reduced from 52 to 23. In 2009 it is facing deficit of further 53%. The biggest ravine area with fallow land in India exists in Madhya Pradesh. During last 20 years, huge land degradation has occurred in the region. People are dying of hunger deaths, children suffer from malnutrition, cattle are abandoned on the streets, acres of land lie barren, the only mode of survival is migration to the cities, the villages are empty leaving the old and sick behind to fend for themselves. Complete collapse of environmental system makes drought a regular feature and then it converts into famine. The policy makers are not yet realizing that agriculture and natural resources are not only a business for Indian society, but measure for socio-economic rights. _Prashanth Vishwanathan for Action Aid
