Jan van Toorn, born in 1932, is one of Holland's most influential graphic designers. Central to his approach is the application of content-based strategies, resulting in a design practice as a form of visual journalism. Opposite to the more self-contained designs of the modernist tradition, Van Toorn is always striving for designs that are open to different ways of seeing... Van Toorn's view on the role of design manifested itself clearly during passionate debates with Wim Crouwel, one of Holland's other great design heroes, and a absolute advocate of pure functional design. Here at the University of Amsterdam Van Toorn's enormous body of work is being persevered for future generations. From the late sixties to late seventies, Van Toorn made special calendars in which he explored different ways of visual communication. For the famous 72 edition Van Toorn collected hundreds of portraits. During Van Toorn's long and longstanding career education has played an important role. With positions at prestigious universities and art institutes worldwide, Van Toorn trained generations of students to conceive their design practice as a quest for creative autonomy. And still, at the age of 80, Van Toorn continues to pass on his love for critical reflection to young graphic designers. Like here at the Saint Joost Academy in Breda where he reviews the work of master students. Daniel van der Velden and Vinca Kruk together form Metahaven, a strategic design agency that has come to define a new methodology in graphic design. Design as a means of knowledge production and a tool to analyse existing power structures, both commercial and political. Many of Metahaven's projects are self-initiated, or collaborations with carefully selected partners, like recently WikiLeaks. In 2010 Metahaven published the book Uncorporated Identity that gives a clear insight in their research based design practice... Here Daniel and Vinca visit the famous printer Lezard in the east of France for a project called Geo Game. Geo Game will be an large-scale installation playing with the idea of geopolitics as a giant board game. http://www.metahaven.net CREDITS: Commissioning editor: Geert van de Wetering Line producer: Janneke van de Kerkhof Production assistant: Anjet Blinde Research: Liselotte Francken Director: Marieke Helmus Camera: Pierre Rezus Sound: Wouter Veldhuis Editor: Maurik de Ridder Voice-over: Micha Westera Color correction: Maurik de Ridder Music sound design: Pastelle Music Produced by Submarine, Femke Wolting & Bruno Felix http://www.submarine.nl Commissioned by DutchDFA http://www.dutchdfa.com Like Dutch Profiles on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/dutchprofiles

Adriaan Geuze is the director and chief designer of West8 urban design and landscape architecture. He teaches at the University of Wageningen and presents lectures worldwide. With his partners, Edzo Bindels, Martin Biewenga and Jamie Maslyn Larson, he leads an international team of 70 people in Rotterdam and New York, working on large urban and landscape projects all over the world. He managed to turn an old Amsterdam harbour into a vibrant urban area. Transforms Governors Island in New York into a successful tourist destination. And came up with a coherent vision for the Toronto Central Waterfront. In each project water is key. In 2011, after 6 years of working, a team of architects from Madrid: Burgos & Garrido, Porras & La Casta, Rubio & Álvarez-Sala and West 8 from Rotterdam finalized the Madrid Rio Project. For decades a highway had been polluting this extremely dense urban area of 10 kilometres along the river of Madrid, obstructing any development. It had to go underground, using 23 kilometres of tunnel, so that the area could be redesigned from scratch. Ancient bridges were completely renovated. And new bridges were added. The mayor of Madrid, Gallardon, wanted fast results, but the building of the tunnels turned out to be an unpredictable process, that demanded the constant flexibility of the designers. http://www.west8.nl CREDITS: Commissioning editor: Geert van de Wetering Line producer: Janneke van de Kerkhof Production assistant: Anjet Blinde Research: Liselotte Francken Director: Noud Holtman Camera: Diderik Evers, Stephanie Phlippen Sound: Wouter Veldhuis Editor: Noud Holtman Voice-over: Micha Westera Color correction: Maurik de Ridder Music sound design: Pastelle Music Produced by Submarine, Femke Wolting & Bruno Felix http://www.submarine.nl Commissioned by DutchDFA http://www.dutchdfa.com Like Dutch Profiles on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/dutchprofiles

Roosje Klap owns a studio for visual communication, mainly graphic design. The studio researches the experimental boundaries of custom fit design. With Roosje Klap a letter type can be unreadable, a book can turn out to be a sculpture and a stamp can become a drawing-by-numbers-drawing. Roosje Klap mainly works for a clientele in the cultural field: museums, galleries, art publishers and artists. For her design of the Encyclopedia of Fictional Artists and for her Rijks Academy Year report 2011 she received a European Design Award. Next to her work as a designer Roosje works as a tutor at The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, and at the Jan Van Eyck Academy. A recent assignment is her design for a Dutch Art Magazine with the mysterious name Mister Motley. Here at a printer in Haarlem, Roosje will review the first prints of her new stamp design for PostNL. http://www.roosjeklap.nl/ CREDITS: Commissioning editor: Geert van de Wetering Line producer: Janneke van de Kerkhof Production assistant: Anjet Blinde Research: Liselotte Francken Director: Jessie van Vreden Camera: Pierre Rezus Sound: Wouter Veldhuis Editor: Andries Wijnker Voice-over: Micha Westera Color correction: Maurik de Ridder Music sound design: Pastelle Music Produced by Submarine, Femke Wolting & Bruno Felix http://www.submarine.nl Commissioned by DutchDFA http://www.dutchdfa.com Like Dutch Profiles on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/dutchprofiles

Richard Hutten started his own design studio in 1991. He is well known for what he refers to as 'No sign of design' furniture: functional furniture in a highly conceptual and humorous style. He is a prominent exponent of Droog design, in which he has been involved since its inception in 1993. Their first show in Milan was a worldwide success. He is also the Art Director at Gispen, the second largest interior office designer in The Netherlands, which was founded in 1916. http://www.richardhutten.com/ CREDITS: Commissioning editor: Geert van de Wetering Line producer: Janneke van de Kerkhof Production assistant: Anjet Blinde Research: Liselotte Francken Director: Carine Bijlsma Camera: Pierre Rezus Sound: Dennis Kersten Editor: Maurik de Ridder Color correction: Maurik de Ridder Music sound design: Pastelle Music Voice-over: Micah Westera Produced by Submarine, Femke Wolting & Bruno Felix http://www.submarine.nl Commissioned by DutchDFA http://www.dutchdfa.com Like Dutch Profiles on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/dutchprofiles

Duzan Doepel, architect and professor of Sustainable Architecture, and Eline Strijkers, interior architect, joined forces in 2007. They won the AM NAI audience award for Parksite, turning an old garage for ambulances into a beautiful residence. They strongly believe that all assignments, whether it's architecture, interior design or urban strategies, can be approached in the same way, with a strong focus on sustainability. By doing extensive research and carefully planning the processes leading up to their designs, they manage to calculate not only the ecological, but also the long-term economical and social implications of their work. This integrated approach can be seen in the HAKA project for example, an office building that allows small companies to work together on a sustainable future In Waalwijk, Doepel Strijkers transformed an old town hall into a museum and workspace for international students in leather and shoe design. Their aim was to create a flexible environment that has a positive influence on the surrounding community as well. Doepel Strijkers' latest project is an organic tequila factory in Mexico that will use its waste products to make textiles, furniture, perfume or bio-fuels. They were able to combine all aspects of their philosophy of sustainability in this single project. http://www.doepelstrijkers.com CREDITS: Produced by Submarine, Femke Wolting & Bruno Felix Commissioned by DutchDFA Commissioning editor: Geert van de Wetering Line producer: Janneke van de Kerkhof Production assistant: Anjet Blinde Research: Liselotte Francken Director: Noud Holtman Camera: Pierre Rezus Sound: Wouter Veldhuis Editor: Noud Holtman Color correction: Maurik de Ridder Music sound design: Pastelle Music Voice-over: Micah Westera Produced by Submarine, Femke Wolting & Bruno Felix http://www.submarine.nl Commissioned by DutchDFA http://www.dutchdfa.com Like Dutch Profiles on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/dutchprofiles

                from Dutch Profiles Added

Lucas Maassen is known for his ironic, almost anarchistic view on design. He started his career by making non-functional chairs, like the nano chair, that is so small that it can only be seen through a an electron microscope, or his sitting chairs that sit but cannot be sat on. In 2011, his 'singing chair' was part of an exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, stating that it was time to stop talking about chairs, and let them talk back to us. Basically, Maassens work can be seen as a critique on the role of the designer in a world of abundance. Maassen believes that in the post-digital era, creating 'tools to design with' will become more important than designing the actual object. He is now developing a tool that can turn thoughts into designs. Recently, Maassen completed another family project. He teamed up with a pharmaceutical company that helped him to turn his parents DNA into a chandelier. http://www.lucasmaassen.nl CREDITS: Commissioning editor: Geert van de Wetering Line producer: Janneke van de Kerkhof Production assistant: Anjet Blinde Research: Liselotte Francken Director: Noud Holtman Camera: Diderik Evers Sound: Wouter Veldhuis Editor: Noud Holtman Color correction: Maurik de Ridder Music sound design: Pastelle Music Produced by Submarine, Femke Wolting & Bruno Felix http://www.submarine.nl Commissioned by DutchDFA http://www.dutchdfa.com Like Dutch Profiles on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/dutchprofiles

Dirk van der Kooij transforms used refrigerators into design furniture. For his Endless Flow chair, he won a Dutch Design Award and the prestigious DMY award in Berlin in 2011. As a machine hacker, he managed to turn a 30 year old technique into a completely new way of fabricating plastic furniture, without the use of any moulds. A technique that is perfectly suited for recycled plastics. Dirk van der Kooij works on many different concepts at the same time, not knowing if or when they will result in an actual product. He tries to come up with innovative functions that consequently dictate new forms. http://www.dirkvanderkooij.nl CREDITS Commissioning editor: Geert van de Wetering Line producer: Janneke van de Kerkhof Production assistant: Anjet Blinde Research: Liselotte Francken Director: Noud Holtman Camera: Pierre Rezus Sound: Eric Leek Editor: Noud Holtman Color correction: Maurik de Ridder Music sound design: Pastelle Music Voice-over: Micah Westera Produced by Submarine, Femke Wolting & Bruno Felix http://www.submarine.nl Commissioned by DutchDFA http://www.dutchdfa.com Like Dutch Profiles on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/dutchprofiles

Joline Jolink is a fashion entrepreneur who chose to stop doing catwalkshows and refuses to let third parties sell her work. She directly communicates with her customers on her own terms. Jolink graduated in 2003 from Artez Insitute. She is the first Dutch fashion designer to exclusively sell through her own stores or - more importantly- her own webshop, that she started in 2008. Allthough Jolinks clothing is made from high quality materials and always meant to be wearable, it is also fashion, due to her personal approach. Each new collection is inspired by an exceptional role model from the past. http://www.jolinejolink.com CREDITS: Commissioning editor: Geert van de Wetering Line producer: Janneke van de Kerkhof Production assistant: Anjet Blinde Research: Liselotte Francken Director: Noud Holtman Camera: Pierre Rezus Sound: Wouter Veldhuis Editor: Noud Holtman Colorcorrection: Maurik de Ridder Voice-over: Micah Westra Music Sound Design: Pastelle Music Produced by Submarine, Femke Wolting & Bruno Felix http://www.submarine.nl Commissioned by DutchDFA http://www.dutchdfa.com Like Dutch Profiles on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/dutchprofiles
