A 2013 update by the Annie E. Casey Foundation reported, “Children who do not read proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to leave school without a diploma than proficient readers.” If we address this here in Oregon, can we turnaround our miserable graduation rate -- the “second lowest among the states, behind Nevada” [Betsy Hammond, 2/6/2014]? If you care about this issue, you need to know about the Children's Institute. In Oregon, we are lucky to have organizations like the Children’s Institute. The Children’s Institute has worked for over a decade to make high quality early education as commonplace in Oregon as kindergarten. This is essential if we want to get all students reading at grade level by third grade -- an early predictor of future success. The Children’s Institute is working at both the policy level and ground level to get more children into high quality learning programs earlier so every child is prepared for kindergarten and beyond. This is the third year Studio Kate produced the featured video for the Institute’s annual fundraiser. The Children’s Institute’s programs on the ground are constantly evolving, so we repeated the “news” approach of using photographs, graphics, voices from the field, and a professional narrator. Kindergarteners were taking part in the Children's Innovation Project. They are asked to understand, not play with, toys. One of the challenges is to sketch details of each toy as a way of noticing and inquiring about its function. That is not an easy task, but Ms. Pajak finds way to help children understand both what they did right and the fact that "you are never, never done!"
