      • Best Practices: All Children Can Learn

from Bay State Reading Institute Added 82 0 0

At Bay State Reading Institute, we believe all children can learn - very definitely including those from low-income or immigrant families. We've created this new video to show what's possible. All of these scenes were filmed in schools with poverty rates of 70% or more and with a good percentage of children whose native tongue is not English. You'll see first graders who can separate fact from opinion, kindergarten students who can write 6 or 7 word sentences, and 5th graders debating whether genetically modified foods are (or are not!) the answer to world hunger. And students are doing this in small group centers, working collaboratively with their peers, while the teacher is on the other side of the room working with a small group.

Recognizing that our society is more mobile than ever, that students moving from place to place were encountering difficulty with transition from one school to another, and that too many students were graduating from high school unprepared for work or needing remedial college courses, the National Governor's Association, the Council of Chief State School Officers, and Achieve, a non-profit educational organization, came together to try and address these challenges. They hoped that through development of a set of rigorous modern standards it would help the mobile population and raise America's competitiveness on a global scale. Is this a solid and necessary educational reform? Is it an erosion of state authority over education? Whatever your thoughts or positions on Common Core, be informed, and be involved.
