In late summer and fall, praying mantises lay eggs that will overwinter and hatch by the droves in spring. This female Chinese mantid chose my front porch for her egg sack. Watch carefully to see her moving as she lays her eggs.

This Eastern Phoebe and her ancestors have been building nests on our front porch for over 40 years. Now I have a camera installed to capture their lives from nest building to egg laying to hatching and fledging. Tiny little birds with instincts honed by countless generations. Right now they are finishing up a nest started from scratch after about a week of activity. Here you see the female putting the finishing touches on her custom fitted nest. She moves around, molding it to her body. Pretty amazing....

5/26/2012 - Saw two snapping turtles along the bike path this morning.... this one excavating hole to lay eggs. there was evidence of three other locations within a few yards of this one where the dirt had been disturbed in a similar fashion. Not sure why digging under the edge of the asphalt bike path seemed to be a popular spot?

A monogenean (flatworm) parasite, _Neobenedenia_ species, removed from the skin of a barramundi (_Lates calcarifer_) in laboratory culture. Marine Monogenea are studied by the Parasitology Section at the South Australian Museum. Principal Research Scientist Assoc Prof Ian Whittington compiled this short video to highlight several biologies and behaviours by a 'typical' monogenean parasite species from the skin and fins of its fish host. This captioned video shows attachment, gas exchange, egg manufacture and laying, the feeding process and egestion of digested wastes. The specimen, approximately 3 mm long, was captured on video in July 2011 in the laboratory of a former PhD student and now research collaborator, Dr Kate Hutson, James Cook University. Ongoing research by the South Australian Museum investigates species identification and 'species complexes' among _Neobenedenia_. For example, consult research published by I.D. Whittington (2004) in Folia Parasitologica 51: 109–122. See: http://folia.paru.cas.cz/pdfs/showpdf.php?pdf=20703
