We had a few mainstem sites to do to complete our surveys, as well as repeating mainstem surveys that we did before the recent floods to see what the effect this had on the juvenile population. This was one of the sites we had not done previously, down on Craigellachie beat just above the Telford Bridge and was one of the areas that we stocked recently with fin clipped fish. Over the course of the three minute survey we caught 112 fry, and 12 of these were fin clipped, which is a positive result for both the fin clipped and wild fish. There were also 6 parr caught.

This site is on Dalraddy, behind the caravan park. Last year this was one of our best sites, with 190 fry. This year it was still supporting a very high number of fry, we caught 143 fry. As you can see there were some eels too, and a friendly spider that I'm not sure where came from!

Here we have the complete video of our mainstem electrofishing survey taken place on Easter Elchies, a beat on the River Spey. You can probably see in the video we are accompanied by the ghillie on this beat and an angler, who were both interested in what we were doing. We always enjoy demonstrating and talking through what we do, and also being able to show them the numbers of fish lurking among the rocks! Here we had 131 fry and 3 parr, which was an increase from last year's result of 104 fry and no parr.

The Lake Erie Fisheries Unit is using electrofishing to collect walleye from the Sandusky River, April 2nd, 2014. Walleye are being used for a telemetry project and for annual assessments of age, growth, and maturity. Electrofishing temporarily stuns the fish, which will recover shortly after being placed in the live well.

This is the last site before Spey Dam, and the last place where there are decent numbers of fish. Although there is a fish pass on the dam, it isn't ideal, and doesn't make it easy for fish to a) get past it, and b) get back down when smolting. Here however, we had 75 salmon fry and 33 parr.
