Kids say the darndest things! I'm currently teaching a film education class to 3rd graders. It's a mutually rewarding experience and I'm fortunate to have this opportunity. I decided to film a short doc on their future life aspirations to serve as a sort of time capsule. Hopefully, they will be able to look back on this years from now (as long as a copy still survives) and see how much they've grown. Directed & Edited by Jackson C. “Looking for Freedom in Florida” consists of 4 videos created by 4th grade students in Mrs. Eeten’s Video Focus Class at Perkins Elementary School, St. Petersburg, Florida. The videos depict the 4 freedoms as envisioned by FDR and the students’ portrayal of those freedoms through their study of Florida’s history. Freedom of Speech, Freedom from Fear, Freedom from Want, and Freedom of Worship. Each Freedom was interpreted by Mrs. Eeten’s, Mr. Heller’s, Mrs. Rosado’s, and Dr. Weiss’ 4th grade students. Given the serious conflicts and deep hatreds that exist in today’s world, we believe that our children will learn that they can contribute in ways that work towards creating and preserving freedom through international understanding. Freedom is a big idea and not easily achieved. That’s why it’s crucial for our world’s children to attain the understandings, skills, and knowledge that nurture a commitment to a better world. See www.4freedoms4kids.com for teachers’ project submissions.
