Pennsylvania's live pigeon shoots are a magnet for the worst elements of society. One pigeon shoot formerly held in Hegins, Pennsylvania was used by the Ku Klux Klan for membership drives. This video captures an assault by an individual who tried to stop the video documentation of a pigeon killing contest. SHARK believes he may have been working on behalf of the club that held the slaughter.

Over coffee at Bluebeard the other day, we had a conversation with Kirsten—the Elk in Tacoma's soulful Elk & Boar—about this and that and mostly, the weather. Our consensus was that Tacoma skies brandish more diversity—day to day, hour to hour—than any other place we've lived. From the gauzy west-facing pinks of afternoon to glowing cloud obelisks pervading the port skies at night to the otherworldly opacity of surprise snowfalls, Tacoma never fails to awe us when we look up. Kirsten invited us to join Elk & Boar in their studio—"The Cottage"—to record a couple of their songs on just such a mercurial day. From the windows we witnessed blinding sunshine punctuated by apocalyptic showers of hail and snow, a series of surly mixed skies that must (we suspected) be concealing triple rainbows, and at least one little renegade cloud that doggedly, preferentially rained on only us—à la Winnie the Pooh. Inside the studio we kept candles lit—Kirsten using her "Swedish Hands" to handle the hot votives—while we discussed the creative process of music. Drummer Dalton sees shades of blue when he plays; Kirsten, shades of red. Travis (Boar) identifies as a "Mozart" while Kirsten a "Beethoven." Nary was there moment when at least one person wasn't plying their instrument with intuition, intensity and just plain love. Musicality courses through the veins of this band as effortlessly as blood. See for yourself in this video of the full band stomping through their song "Ten Steps to Free." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Cult Tacoma culttacoma.com "Ten Steps to Free" by Elk + Boar elkandboar.wordpress.com sound by Ryan Rood bandmix.com/roodsound/ shot + edited by The Art Dept. helloartdept.com

I had a late season cow elk tag in my pocket with hopes to put some choice meat in our freezer for the winter. My earlier attempts came up empty.... so now it is down to the last day. A storm is rolling in so hopefully the elk will be up and moving!

This is a video I took couple weeks ago. Those elk's were about 60 feet ahead of me when they smell me and suddenly leave. After a while one comes back and I'm chickening - I'll climb to the tree and take several shots when the elk goes just about 10 feets without seeing me.

Claire, a confidant and comrade in visual voyages, introduced me to Pat, a pistol-packing taxidermist up in the Poudre Canyon of Colorado. Pat had a fox in his shop the first time Claire went; I have more than a modest penchant for foxes. There were no Vulpes on this day, but Pat invited us up to share with us his work and process. All work is at once both craft and art; skill and vision, tradition and invention, declaration and interpretation, joy and toil. Pat spoke much on the difference between his desire and motives as a professional and those of his clients as consumers. The devil is always in the detail; Pat spoke of nose hairs, musk glands in antelopes cheeks, and the shapes of irises in glass eyes. He just as well could have been discussing hierarchies of typographic systems, tensile strength in logging chain, chromatic aberration in camera lenses, or resonance in the head of a banjo. All things that the makers understand and the takers can only read about. We all seek fair wages and satisfaction for our work from those who buy it. We often additionally apply our own measure and caliber to the same work for ourselves; a measure only we can see. Which when done to our own approval, compensates us in very different and equal ways. Music: 'Furr' by Blitzen Trapper, recorded at a Daytrotter session.
