Autumn, 2012 Complex Movements teamed up with Tiff Massey to create Three Phases, an interactive, immersive-environment based performance installation. Additional hacking by AJ Manoulian, and woodwork by Brian Dubois. This work received ArtPrize’s juror award for the time-based performance category. Many thanks to the whole SiTE:LAB team, ArtPrize, Cathy Edwards, Sarah Scott, the Heartside Gallery and Studio fam, GRIID, Our Kitchen Table, The Bloom Collective, 4TLOHH, Doc, Red, Insite, and everyone else who pitched in to make magic happen. Complex Movements is a Detroit-based artist collective composed of graphic designer/fine artist Wesley Taylor, music producer/filmmaker Waajeed, hip-hop lyricist/activist Invincible, and creative technologist Carlos (L05) Garcia. Their multimedia performance installations, hand crafted songs, and trans-genre experiments explore the relationship between complex science and social justice movements. Complex Movements is a recipient of a 2012 MAP Fund grant and Michigan ArtServe/Creative Many’s CSA project and is a winner of ArtPrize’s 2012 juried time-based performance category. They have presented their work at The Detroit Science Center for Kresge’s Art X Detroit festival, Re:View Gallery, the Network of Ensemble Theater’s Microfest, Cranbrook Art Museum and SiTE:LAB at the old Grand Rapids Public Museum. Tiff Massey is a Detroit-based artist. Her love affair with jewelry/metals originated as early as high school. She began her formal education in the field of biology at Eastern Michigan University. Her interests in the arts overcame her science background, and soon after graduation she returned to school to pursue fine arts, concentrating in metals. She immersed herself in the field, receiving classical training in the fine arts through various avenues. She took her education further by continuing her education on the graduate level at the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art. Since earning her Master of Fine Arts she has been involved in many group shows throughout the United States and Europe.

This work in progress performance by Complex Movements (titled 'Quantum Leap') was presented during Kresge's Art x Detroit festival, at the Detroit Science Center, which took place April 7th 2011. The installation objects on the set are designed and built by Wesley Taylor and include a dandelion-shaped platform, a custom-designed DJ booth, hexagon-shaped seats for the string players and drummer, and Light Drum (:37-:42), triggered by Invincible's touch, mirroring her lyrical cadence. At the onset of the song 'Emergence' (:47-:55), the audience is being lifted and shaken by hydraulic seats, a built-in element of the Detroit Science Center's 4-D theater. At 1:44-1:57 notice the video display element not only amplifies images of community-led movements for social justice, the video mix is responding live to the volume and rhythm of the music using Max/MSP software.
