Some people oppose contraceptives in any form. They perpetuate the myth that next day birth control is an abortion pill. They think rape victims should be denied access to emergency contraception. The problem is some of them are legislators. Mine is a voice of reason, let them hear yours. Young women can now get the morning after pill in advance of needing it. This allows them to have emergency contraception as soon as they need it and therefore increase its effectiveness and reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancy. Dr Sam Wellapili explains how emergency contraception in advance may be helpful and summarises the controversy around this issue. On the 25th March 2014, NICE (one of the medical regulatory bodies) released new guidance which states that it would be advantageous to young women to be able to access the morning after pill in advance of them needing it, so that they can use it more appropriately and faster. You can get the morning after pill in advance by speaking to your local GP and going through a conventional consultation. Alternatively if you wanted to contact us at LloydsPharmacy, then our NHS accredited doctors will be able to assess your suitability and prescribe as appropriate. For more information on requesting the morning after pill in advance, please visit LloydsPharmacy at the link below: https://onlinedoctor.lloydspharmacy.com/womens-health/emergency-pill/morning-after-pill-for-future-use

"Definitely don't want to use it unless I have to." Pregnancy scares are no fun. That's something men and women seem to agree on. Even though women are the ones who physically have to use emergency contraception, we asked a group of guys to talk about their experiences with it. Their stories are unique, but all of them were grateful that emergency contraception was available when they needed it.

Emergency contraception is a safe, effective and responsible method of preventing pregnancy when regular contraception has failed, no contraception was used and/or in the case of sexual assault. As a result of the frequent questions asked by women and men about Emergency Contraception within many of our training programmes, the IFPA would like to present a new information clip on Emergency Contraception. This 4 minute animation presents clear, non-judgmental factual information on how Emergency Contraception works and where you can access it. The clip can be used as a training resource and was launched at the Women Deliver conference 2013. Women Deliver 2013 served as a global platform for ensuring that the health and rights of girls and women remain top priorities now, and for decades to come.
