This is a short film I shot in New Zealand during November of 2014. My friend, Rob Lay, owns an amazing piece of property there called Camp Hill. It is about an hour from Queenstown in an area bordering rivers, rain forest, national park, ranches, and popular filmscape. Much of the land had been cleared for pasture and hay before he bought it, but he has been gradually restoring it to a more natural state, connecting the remaining forests by planting thousands of native trees each year since 2006. Through trial and error, he developed a systematic process to plant trees with the help of novice labor, achieving unprecedented survival rates of better than 97%. Years later, the trees are thriving and native birds are back in large numbers, filling the air with song again. The planting season is short this far south in New Zealand, so Rob focuses on the logistics of getting plants, labor, and materials, while preparing the land, installing irrigation, controlling pests, weeding, and maintaining previous plantings. I have visited a couple of times, but it is still hard for me to visualize all of the activities he tells me about (i.e. 3,500 trees planted in a season, new huts built, invasive vegetation cleared, ponds built, battles for legal permission to perform restoration fought). He’s too busy doing the work to be able to document it, so this year I visited for three weeks to take pictures and shoot video. My interest is in applying technology to create beautiful pictures. Over the last ten years I have dabbled in still photography, high resolution panoramas, motion controlled time-lapse, and video. This year’s focus was on aerial videography using a quadcopter. I captured hours of footage detailing the planting process for Rob to help others learn from his experience. For those of us curious about what Rob’s been up to in New Zealand, I’ve assembled “Above Camp Hill" to provide an overview of the beautiful location and a taste of the project. Equipment details: DJI Phantom 2 with Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal supporting a GoPro Hero 4 Black camera. Mostly shot at 2.7kp30 resolution. Time-lapse sequences shot with Canon 5D3 and 5D2 cameras and eMotimo TB3 motion control using custom software. Audio captured with Roland R-26 Field Recorder. Edited with FCPX and Motion using Alex4D Wide Angle Fix and Hawaiki Color plug-ins.

                      What are Tags?

                      Tags

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
