Gerry Harris is 92 and has vascular dementia. Because there are no beds available in specialist care homes he is confined to a psychiatric ward in the local hospital. There is nothing for him to do there. The NHS is overloaded and cannot give him the time or the resources to help him with the awful consequences of his disease. So he must live out the rest of his life, either drugged or in distress. HIs family do what they can to visit and keep his spirits up but as the dementia takes its toll, their fears that he can have some kind of dignity and respect at the end of his life only increase. A cautionary tale for a health service faced with an ever increasing ageing population many of whom will die with dementia. La Maison de Gardanne is a portrait of daily life in a French palliative care center, located between Marseille and Aix-en-Provence. With a paid staff of 75 and 30 volunteers for 24 residents, the level of care is extremely high, and not only because of the low patient-caregiver ratio. La Maison is oriented towards the needs of the residents: there are no set visiting hours for relatives, no wake-up calls in the morning, or obligations to take meals in the dining room. The staff do not wear white coats or name tags, everyone is on a first-name basis, and eats lunch together in the dining room. While the emphasis is on making residents as comfortable and pain-free as possible, the center also offers a wide range of activities and treatments such as daily massages and baths in order to insure maximum autonomy as long as possible. The film is in French. A version with English subtitles is available by contacting the director, Eric Breitbart, at e.breitbart@gmail.com His website: www.breitbartfilms.com

http://www.brightsightgroup.com || A large majority of Americans still die in hospitals or nursing homes. Many suffer poorly controlled pain or other physical miseries and endure their final days feeling undignified and a burden to others. Few of us can even imagine how things might be different. Therein lies the crux of the problem. Our society and mainstream American culture have never grappled with the fundamental fact of mortality; therefore, we do not know what to expect or what is possible.
