A 7-minute animated film by Isaac King. The term "second hand" refers to the ticking hand on a clock; it also describes re-used items. Would you rather save time? Or save stuff? This film examines the imbalance and waste created by these modern obsessions. I designed and built my own home using the best green building techniques that I knew of. The home generates 100% of its own electricity from sunlight, uses straw bale walls for insulation, has earth plaster wall finishes, and includes a rainwater cistern. The home does not need an air conditioning system despite summer temperatures that can reach 100 degrees. Half the fun of the project was documenting the entire construction process from start to finish. This would permit others to learn from my experience. The project became a DVD video and book called "Building With Awareness". Most of the video was shot on DV. The letterbox sequences were shot on super-16 mm film. 80 hours of film and video were cut down to under 3 hours. You can learn more about the home on my website at http://www.buildingwithawareness.com+ More details

Britain has some of the oldest housing on the planet, which makes it among the worst for energy efficiency. Whilst there is an obvious environmental message to tell the householders of the UK, research tells us that the 'green' message is not as motivational as money saving. This 60 second short aims to shame Britain into action to get proper insulation for their homes. Created for The Great British Refurb competition.+ More details

This short film about the Nauhaus Prototype Project, based in Asheville, North Carolina, was made for a class at UNCA. About the project: The first Nauhaus has been designed and construction started begin in May of 2009. We call it a prototype because it’s the first project in which we are combining all aspects of the Nauhaus vision: the highest possible level of energy efficiency, low-embodied energy non-toxic (“natural”) materials, impeccable indoor air quality, sustainable water management, indoor and outdoor living, urban infill, on-site energy production, and an abundant edible landscape brought together to create a model of urban sustainability. In addition, this project will provide valuable data for others in the green building movement because we will performance monitor the home for several years to compare theoretical to actual performance. The Nauhaus Prototype Project is a collaboration between Nauhaus Design, Mosaic Realty and Eco Concepts Development.+ More details
