In 2010 Teemu Takatalo and Tommi Taipale decided they would build a catamaran from waste materials, and they did. By August both artists were moving under sail, exploring the Archipelago Sea - in their Baltic Herring. During the journeys crew of Silakka invited guests from all walks of life to join their adventures and discuss the downfall of western civilization. "It was time for a break, to escape the grip of a society heading for dystopia. So we built the raft from junk. From all what had already been used, thrown away, discarded and forgotten. And the Baltic Herring was born, the result of common sense and do-it-yourself glory", says Takatalo and Taipale. "Our catamaran, with which we can reach open scenery - out to sea, where wind re-styles your hair as it wants and logic of the land tastes like road dust. Finally even the most tired river flows into the sea - with it our junk, our European civilization, political system, and culture, which seems to have no constructive answer as to how we can live in harmony with nature, upon which we are unquestionably dependent. There's been more talk about the environment recently. From the outer archipelago, that talk sounds like the buzz of a fly. There's no point in grasping single problems, like algae blooming or the dioxin in the Baltic herrings, without considering our lost relationship with nature. If you are going to win life back from capitalism, you have to do it with your hands and two feet." Guests that are interviewd in the video are: Ilppo Vuorinen, Yrjö Haila, Tere Vadén, Lotta Tenhunen, Kai Vaara, Juho Vuori, Olli Tammilehto, Ossi Kakko. The Crew: Tommi Taipale, Teemu Takatalo, Heikki Tuorila, Juha Mehtäläinen, Ossi Kakko, Riku Ritvanen, Juho Vuori, Hanna Arima, Viljami Ritvanen, Aura Kalli, Philip Pedersen, Sebastian Boulter, Outi Yli-Viikari, Jonne Kauko and many others. Thank you for them and all the rest that has been involved! The Rescue Boat Baltic Herring has been produced as part of Curated Expedition to the Baltic Sea project by Capsula.

Screenings: -CBC Martimes Reviews: "I'm delighted his story is now told on film." - David Suzuki "Thank you for sending the DVD of your film about Rudy Haase. What a wonderful man he is! You have captured his vitality and energy which certainly is inspiring. He would seem to be the ideal model for us all. It was a joy to see St Barbe as part of your documentary and I'm glad he is now part of Rudy's story." - Leon Narbey (New Zealand feature film director; cinematographer on Whale Rider; filmmaker, Man Of The Trees, a portion of which of which is included in Rudy Haase.) "This documentary captures Rudy's youthful love of life and nature. It will motivate many people for years to come, to be more active, socially aware, and inspired to protect nature. I consider myself as someone who stands up for a better way, in harmony with nature - but I've walked away humbled and encouraged to write more, do more, and enjoy more of our earth. Not many films can do that. Thanks for your successful film, and thanks for having the talent and "good sense" to create it the way you did. "I laughed, I was amazed, and I left inspired." - Doug Neil, Communications Consultant Description: A biography about Canada's great unknown environmental and social activist, Rudy Haase. Now 85 years old, Rudy was born in the USA and lives in Nova Scotia with his wife Mickey. His life's work has involved preserving wilderness in Canada, the USA, Costa Rica, and New Zealand. In Nova Scotia Rudy Haase has been active for more than four decades on many envi ronmental issues from fighting against the clear cutting and pesticide spraying of forests to opposing uranium mining. The film is also a primer on environmentalism, from Richard St. Barbe Baker to Helen and Scott Nearing, all illustrated by many well-known Nova Scotia environmental battles. With appearances by Elizabeth May, Canadian environmental leader, Green party leader. Produced in association with CBC Maritimes and the Chester Educational Foundation.

The Justice Department is putting Tim DeChristopher on trial for blocking an illegal federal oil and gas auction. This absurdity is heightened by the judge’s subsequent ruling, legally prohibiting Tim from telling the jury his reasons for doing what he did. Even though the judge is severely restricting what Tim can say, the government continues to delay the trial, denying Tim justice. The oil industry might not want us to have this trial, but we do. “The Climate Trial” took place November 5th, 2010, with or without the court. This trial is not just about Tim; it’s about holding the real criminals accountable. Join us—you’ll be the jury—deciding where the responsibility lies for passing on a healthy world to our children. more information: peacefuluprising.org
