This video zooms in on NGC 7714, one of a pair of merging galaxies. The sequence begins with a view of the night sky near the constellation of Pisces. It then zooms through observations from the Digitized Sky Survey 2, and ends with a view of the galaxy obtained by Hubble. This video pans across the sky near to galaxy NGC 7714 in the constellation of Pisces, ending on a view of the object itself. This galaxy is in the process of merging with its neighbour NGC 7715. Tell-tale signs of this brutal process can be seen in NGC 7714's strangely shaped arms, and in the smoky golden haze that stretches out from the galactic centre. On November 12, 02014, the world watched as the ESA Rosetta Mission, which carries onboard a Rosetta Disk, successfully soft-landed its research craft "Philae" on Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. That morning, several staff and Long Now members gathered at a breakfast simulcast event in the Chabot Space and Science Center planetarium. As we awaited news of the landing, I gave a presentation on the history of the Rosetta Disk, describing it in the context of other projects that have delivered messages from humanity into space -- the Apollo 11 Goodwill Messages, Pioneer Plaques, Voyager Disks, Arecibo Message, and Mars Rover DVDs. The main question that intrigued me as I put the talk together was why we as humans do this, what it means, and what our purpose might be for doing so in the future. Later, I had the chance to interview Long Now Executive Director Alexander Rose on the history of the Rosetta Disk project, and asked him for his thoughts on these questions. Chris Baldwin made us this video of the interview, with intro and outro segments from "Ambition" -- a sci fi short created by ESA that imagines a future where the Rosetta Mission has unlocked great treasures of knowledge about the origins of life on Earth. -Laura Welcher longnow.org

More space news and info at: http://www.coconutsciencelab.com - this is a "cross-eye" (no glasses) 3D video. To get the 3D effect, you need to cross your eyes until the image you see on the left seems to merge with the image you see on the right. The combined image you see in the middle will be in 3D. Watching the video using full screen will make it easier on your eyes and looks a lot better, also. Image Credit: ESA Edited by: Coconut Science Lab
