Digital Escalator Panels (DEP) at the London Underground is a relatively new and untapped advertising medium. Thousands of people use the tube's escalator daily and are exposed to the DEPs, yet the content available on them are more often than not dull and uninspiring. This is done in response to a brief by CSM BA Graphic Design Moving Image. The brief is to start with a paradox and communicate the idea of the chosen paradox via the DEPs. Working in groups of two, the paradox we've chosen is "You got to get up to get down". The idea is to make the whole escalator ride a paradox: When people are going up the escalator, arrows on the screen will be going down and vice versa. Since the screen is often used for advertising. We imagined the work could be used for "dance mat" style video game and so we took reference from it, making the whole trip a disco ride. The aim is to catch attention and play with people's sense of direction. A delayed live feed is also planned on the screen to play footage of the person going pass it in reverse so as to confuse them even more.

Late at night and stuck at Baltimore/Washington International Airport. An early snowstorm shut down most of the airports in the northeast U.S. and inbound flights are diverted to any open airport. Absolutely no one around and one of the busiest places in the modern world is deathly silent. Nothing is moving except the machines left to run automatically and the noises produced by them seem exceptionally loud and almost rhythmically hypnotic. This major inconvenience seemed like a great opportunity to me so instead of getting a hotel room somewhere,I spent the night wandering around the airport and shooting video. Anyway, this is the escalator to BWI gates 6-11, glad to finally have a chance to use some of the footage from that night. The sound was captured by the camera. I’m still wondering what the security guys watching the closed circuit monitors were thinking as they watched me amuse myself riding the escalators and people movers all night. On a more serious note, I discovered after I started making videos that sound, to me, seems as or more important than the visuals. It seems to set the tone and carry the emotion in a video. And my question, to use a dance metaphor, who / what leads? The sound or visual. Would love to know what you think. And thanks for this challenge. It’s a great topic.
