A concrete detail is the passage that you have selected from a book or research that supports your essay topic. You may have heard a concrete detail referred to as an exmple, detail, fact, passage, or citation. I use Concrete Detail (Cd) to denote only one part of an Example. For our class, an example is made up of Context - Concrete Detail - Commentray. In this way, you need your passage (Cd) and before it, you need to provide the context in which the passage occurs. What happens in the story or in the research that is necessary to set the stage for the Cd you will share? After the Cx and Cd, it is time for Commentary (Cm). In the commentary, you share your thoughts. This is where you explain the significance of your Cd and analyze it for the reader. This is where you show what you know. The Cx and Cd come from the book/research. The Cm comes from your mind. You have not analyzed enough if your Cm is shorter than your Cx+Cd. http://schools.evergreenps.org/Page/1851

You have collected your passages from the text or research (Cds)...great! Now it is time to put those Concrete Details to use. Before each Cd, you need the Context. The context is what the reader needs to know in order to understand your Cd. In an essay about a novel, the Cx is what is going on in the story right before the passage. In research, the Cx is what the reader needs to know (terms, styles, history, people, importance) in order to understand the Cd. After each Cd, you need Commentary. The commentary is where you show that you know what you KNOW. The commentray is the place for your observations and thoughts on the Cd. Why is this Cd important to proving your thesis? This is where you analyze. Your commentary should be larger, with more depth, than your Cx and Cd combined. And this makes sense--the Cx comes from the book, the Cd comes from the book, but it is only the Cm that is new and your thinking. http://schools.evergreenps.org/Page/1851

Your essay is built of various pieces. Once you learn the pieces and how to use them, you will be able to move on to more sophisticated writing. Your essay will have an introduction paragraph, a minimum of three body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. Your trident planner accounts for these paragraphs. See how easy it is to use your thinking to write the essay. In many ways, once the planning is done, the essay writes itself http://schools.evergreenps.org/Page/1851

http://schools.evergreenps.org/Page/1851 Before you write your essay, you need to have a plan. I am sure that you have read the book, or done the research. However, can you SHOW that you understand? Yes, yes you can. In an essay. It is through writing that you show you understand. This is why knowing how to write an essay is so important. In your high school career, you are likely to write a minimum of 3 large essays a year. The tough part for many student writers is getting ideas out on paper. For this reason, an intermediate step is useful. This step is called brainstorming and occurs before drafting (writing) your essay. Once your have your ideas out of your head and orgainzed, you can then draft a first version of your essay. You will have many versions before the final if you want to have quality, sophisticated writing. This video shows how to use a trident to organize your ideas.

http://schools.evergreenps.org/Page/1851 Since your body paragraph has a minimum of two examples (cx - cd - cm), you need a transition between the examples so that the reader knows you have gone from one example to the second example. Also, see how the various parts of a paragraph are built on each other.

After you get comfortable with this format, I encourage you to branch out to a more sophisticated style. There is an example video of that as well as resources on our class web site. Plus, you can ask a peer or your teacher--he is pretty smart.
