        • Ostroda Reggae Festival Poland 2010 (documentary English version)

from Ostroda Reggae Festival Added 2,888 0 0

Please see a documentary movie on the major Polish reggae event - Ostroda Reggae Festival 2010 in Ostroda (between Warsaw and Gdansk). 10th edition of the festival - interviews, memories of the history, artists, audience, atmosphere and live bits of the shows. Ostróda is highly acclaimed both for its programming and wonderful atmosphere. 2010 PR: OSTRODA REGGAE FESTIVAL 2010 11 – 14 August 2010 Former military complex at Czarnieckiego street, Ostroda, Poland Ostroda Reggae Festival is the most important event in the Polish reggae calendar. For 9 years, Ostroda town and especially the area surrounding the former Prussian military complex where the festival takes place, pulsates with living red, gold and green. A friendly atmosphere permeates, well-known artists headline and interesting newcomers abound in performances on two stages: live and sound system. These are just some of the many reasons to visit the festival for thousands of roots music fans from across Europe and the world. After 9 highly acclaimed events, time has come for the tenth anniversary. The festival will take place at its regular location on 12-15 August 2010. Ostroda Reggae Festival is a continuation from the Ost-Rock Festival established during the 1980’s. The history of the festival is one of people, those who first attended it as fans, later as musicians and now as organisers. In its present shape it has taken place annually from 2001. Those involved in this reactivation were Artur „Many” Munje – head of the local council department for promotion, tourism & culture, and the festival director Piotr „Piter” Kolaj – the owner of Positive Music Promotion (www.positive.pl), producers of the event. More than 350 artists, including around 120 from outside Poland, have performed on its stages over the past 9 years and the shows have been attended by over 10 000 people each year. All the major Polish reggae artists have performed at Ostroda festival, many several times and often to celebrate special events. Polish reggae legends Izrael, played their first show here after a long break. Other key Polish artists, Bakshish and Daab celebrated their 25th anniversaries at the festival. Ostroda 2009 was the site of the first live show from Polish-Jamaican project Rastasize. Among many, the following headlining artists must receive a mention: I Jah Man, Max Romeo, Misty in Roots, Steel Pulse, Yellowman, Twinkle Brothers, Tosh Meets Marley, Zion Train, Rootz Underground, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Dub Inc., Jahcoustix, Earl 16 & U-Brown backed by No More Babilon, Omar Perry, General Levy, Overproof Sound System… At Ostroda the audience have been able to experience for the first time many acts previously unknown in Poland. Innumerable instrumentalists, singers and DJs made the first steps in their music career here. The Young Polish Reggae Bands Contest is always a great opportunity to perform in front of large audience for many fledgling artists. A core part of the festival program is The Reggae University – it involves meetings, workshops and seminars with various ‘roots culture authorities’. Another attraction is The Festival Cinema. The whole arena vibrates with dozens of stalls selling various items related to reggae culture and is a place for a rich international exchange of goods and ideas. Many artists from all around the world recorded their own versions of the festival anthem – ‘Positive Riddim’, a track composed by Piotr ‘Piter’ Kolaj, expressing their respect for the event that was for them much more than just another show. In 2009 Ostroda Reggae Festival was marked out for appreciation by the biggest European reggae event Rototom Sunsplash and received an invitation to collaborate in their European Reggae Contest – an international competition for young artists. Polish act Vavamuffin performed in the contest and won second prize. The winner, Swiss Junior Tshaka also performed at Ostroda. Thanks to support of local authorities Ostroda has successfully changed its image to become a ‘more rootsy’ town. One of the interesting ideas resulting from co-operation with the festival was a change of the town’s emblem (to include the reggae colours). The support and trust of the audience has been confirmed in the annual votes of Free Colours readers (the main Polish reggae magazine), since 2005 the festival has continuously won the ‘Polish music event of the year’ category. Moreover, Piotr ‘Piter’ Kolaj won a valuable first place as ‘reggae person of 2005 in Poland’. After last year Ostroda was also voted “Reggae event of the year” in the Miasto Muzyki portal by more than 70 % of the participants. Ostroda Reggae Festival has a greater depth and meaning than simply the most important point on the Polish reggae map.
