This is my final project for my Form in Motion class. I tried experimenting with layering footage to create an effect in which film from the Vietnam War is projected onto bodies to create interesting graphics. I do not own the song used in this video. The song is Uncommon Valor by Jedi Mind Tricks, off the album "Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell." Babygrande Records 2005-2006.

"I found that the chief difficult for most people was to realize that they had really heard 'new things': that is, things that they had never heard before. They kept translating what they heard into their habitual language. They had ceased to hope and believe there might be anything new." - P.D. Ouspensky

Based on original footage of a West Lake light and sound show, this short experimental work abstracts out the light and color and mysterious motion of the performance. The audio track combines multiple recordings, including the chanting of Buddhist monks. The intended effect is dream-like and meditative. Please note, I chose Sanskrit but the language (not an option) is Pāli, a classical and liturgical language of the Theravāda Buddhist canon, a Middle Indo-Aryan language of north Indian origin. On the whole, Pāli seems closely related to the Old Indo-Aryan Vedic and Sanskrit dialects but is apparently not directly descended from either of these

World of Water is based on footage shot at Volcano Falls, IL, a somewhat tacky but quite fun off-the-highway amusement park. I used custom kaleidoscopic software as well as a variety of video effects to manipulate the source footage into a self-referential pulsating composition in which the waters swirl endlessly in a strange self-enclosed world. Random tiger appearances help set the adventurous tone.

Sky of Dubai is based on video I shot from a helicopter over the city and surrounding region of Dubai. The aerial view and algorithmic processing highlights the unique modern landscape and varied environmental aspects of this extraordinary city. Although I am using video and custom software rather than brushes, I feel that these works are in the spirit of action painting movement. The end product is just one possible physical manifestation of my experiences and thought processes that are codified on the computer and realizable in any number of ways (at different scales, using projection or a screen, altering program parameters, etc.). Inspired by my background in painting (MFA RISD), math (BA Brown) and my interest in Islamic art, I use a symmetrical kaleidoscopic framework to merge East and West, old and new, and bring spiritual order to visual complexity. Title: Sky Over Dubai, 2014, HP 1080p digital video. 4 minute seamless loop, Edition (Size + Number): 3 + AP
