Push back from those fad diets. Flavor-of-the-month food plans may increase sales, but don’t do much to decrease weight. By the time someone gets to Lee Memorial Health System dietitian Carrie Bloemers, they’ve exhausted their options and their patience. “Most of those people I find they’ve, they’ve tried it before and they’ve potentially failed and cycled and yo-yoed with weight loss,” says Carrie Bloemers. Playing into the yo-yo game, dieters often deny themselves, then lose resolve and binge. Experts suggest you avoid getting too hungry. When you’re famished you make poor decisions. “I always recommend keeping non-perishable type snacks on hand; maybe some nuts or a protein-based bar. Something that will take the edge off, that way you’re not starving,” says Bloemers. And be honest about your food intake. You’re only fooling yourself if you sneak snacks or pile on extra helpings. A diet journal helps you track the facts. “It’s really eye-opening to start to acknowledge and really comprehend what you’re putting in your mouth every day,” says Bloemers. A healthy weight loss plan includes exercise. In the same way you plan meals, it’s important to set aside time for activity daily. A lifestyle or fitness coach can keep you moving in the right direction. “One of the things that we really focus on is trying to find new ways to keep yourself motivated. Whether it’s through getting a new piece of equipment that you’re excited about, a tracking tool, new music to try to get you motivated,” says Sarah Mitchell, who is a lifestyle coach with Lee Memorial Health System. And rethink your words. Talk ‘fit’ not ‘fat’ and ‘can’ not ‘can’t’ studies show people with positive language are more likely to make at long-term changes. Finally, enjoy the mini-victories. “You can look to people complimenting you for one reason or another, sometimes it’s even a compliment of energy, it doesn't always have to be tied to a number or to a size,” says Mitchell. Focusing on the big picture will boost your health and help you drop those extra pounds. • Gluten Free Diet: Friend or Fad?

When it comes to diets, gluten-free is gaining a following. “I think a lot of people just hop on the train thinking they’re going to lose weight,” says Kaylee Robinson. Eliminating gluten is a must for those with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes a malabsorption of nutrients. “Patients who are diagnosed with celiac disease have to avoid a protein called gluten and gluten is found in wheat, rye and barley,” says Marjorie Chutkan, a registered dietician with Lee Memorial Health System. But is it for everyone? A recent poll found a growing number of people are giving up gluten cold turkey, with no medical cause. It has experts weighing in on whether this diet is ‘friend or fad’. “Adapting the gluten free diet, its not something we recommend for regular people because you might find that you become deficient if you don’t plan your meals properly,” says Chutkan. Still almost 50% of people asked thought ‘gluten-free’ meant healthier and 30% of them bought gluten free foods to manage their weight. Turns out, gluten free products tend to be more expensive and higher in sugar, carbohydrates and calories. It doesn’t add up to Kaylee. “Because after you do look into its not what it’s supposed to do,” says Robinson. Before trying any fad diet, check with your doctor, because being healthy never goes out of style.
