Meet Fae Anderson Picklesimer, a 96-year-old adventurer whose life of exploration and community service has influenced many, including me...a fortunate grandchild. In this chapter of her documentary, Fae remembers working with George Pace at the Big Hand Cafe, an iconic St. George cafe from the 1920s through the 1960s. It was demolished in the 1970s and replaced with Ancestor Square. Today, George's great-niece Nicki Pace and husband Randall Richards own and operate George's Corner Restaurant in the same spot as the Big Hand Cafe. • Pediatric Cardio: Heart Condition Dangerous if Undetected

It is called a silent killer. The CDC estimates two-thousand young people die each year, the result of a sudden cardiac arrest. In many cases the cause is cardiomyopathy. Dr. Eric Eason is a pediatric cardiologist with Golisano Children’s Hospital. “It’s a malformation of how the actual cells of the heart work. They’ve become disorganized and this can produce either a thinning out of the wall and a dilation of the heart or a thickening or hypertrophy of the heart,” says Dr. Eason. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which causes a thickening and abnormal enlargement of the heart, is the leading cause of death among young athletes. “It can obstruct the flow out of the heart. So when a kid is exerting themselves very heavily, that sometimes can produce an arrhythmia that can be fatal,” says Dr. Eason. The condition is often detected in babies, who are not growing or feeding well. But many kids slip into adolescence without being diagnosed. A thorough sports screening may trigger a closer examination. “They’ll ask the patient specific questions to trigger responses that may hint at a heart problem. They’ll ask specifically for a family history of inheritable heart defects. Then sometimes an EKG is performed,” says Dr. Eason. In older children symptoms include: shortness of breath, rapid breathing, fainting, chest pain and fatigue. If detected early, cardiomyopathy can be successfully treated. “It’s always about preventing avoidable fatal events. So if we know about the cardiomyopathy sooner we can restrict and treat and prevent events that could take somebody’s life,” says Dr. Eason. When it comes to young people, if there is any doubt, it is wise to play it safe and seek a professional opinion.
